Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Good evening peeps!

Aren't we lucky to have this weather?! My mood disorder doesn't stand a chance against the warm and sunny days.

Another helpful thing is that one of my shipped egg Swedish flower Hen chicks hatched out - boy? Girl? Gah, probably a boy with my luck, but still. Pretty little gray and cream colored baby.

I stole 2 of the 11 eggs under the Pilgrim goose and her gander (BOTH sitting on this mega-nest they've got going on) and stuck them in an incubator. I figure there is at least a little hope they might hatch, whereas no hope with that many eggs under the geese. These 2 were poking out from behind her. I had no idea the gander would nest with her, it's pretty sweet. When she starts picking at the nest, moving straw, feathers, pebbles and whatnot around, he lifts whatever part of his body is in the way then settles back down. They both do the little body sway thing to settle onto the eggs, so cute!

Got my scooter mostly washed up from the winter grime today, and it's about time. Need to ride whenever possible, and I've been getting jealous watching all those folks on two wheels buzzing by. What a joy to ride in warmth!

Take care, all.

Keeps me out of trouble............................................................LOL !!!
Wow! your new place is really coming along. I love the red color.

We saw a rat the size of a football! I must have fed it good. I think he eats more than my ducks combined.
DS took out his BB. Haven't seen any since. Took out 5. Ratzilla and his 4 ninjas. Nasty.
Eeeek! I think I'd faint if I saw ratzilla - but I think he's living in my lawnmower. The tirds I see there are huge compared to anything in the coops.

Those are such cutie patooties!
I'd like to suggest putting marbles in the tray of that red waterer.  You've probably notice by now that those little cuties fall down where ever they are when they fall asleep.  Sometimes they drop their face right into the water and drown.  The marbles help prevent the drowning.  Once other person I know just lost a chick that way.  If you don't have marbles, large glass "beads" or something smooth like that, you can use rocks but they're harder to clean.

p.s.  A nipple waterer is even better and you can move it to their coop later.

Will ducklings use a nipple waterer? How do you get your chicks/ducks to use them?

Crows and ravens have carried off my chicks, ducklings and goslings. They wait until a baby is far behind and snag them. I have see it several times. Now I raise my ducks and chicks in the barn. As for the goslings, they are with their parents in the pond. They lose about 2/3 of the babies each year. You can't kill them as it is illegal so I run out towards them with a stick and chase them off. They fly 50 feet away and sit in a tree until I leave. I have 5 or so and one year watched them pick off four chicks in about one minute.
Hmm, you might want to check that out. Here we can kill them IF YOU HAVE A PERMIT! Some places you can even turn them in (one wing) and get a bounty, but it's only ten cents each.

Quote: People who say build big are asssuming you will love chickens. If you've never done chickens before, there's a chance you won't like them. In which case, I'd build small. Why invest a lot in something you may not enjoy? You can always build bigger later. The first small coop can be used for brooding, or isolation, or a flock within the flock. It won't go to waste.
