You won't see any tail curls on Muscovies - they don't have any! The caruncles will develop more on males, and they will soon start to outgrow the females. By adulthood they will be almost twice the size of the females. Also, if you have other kinds of ducks, they will often interbreed with "scovies - so watch out for mules!
This is so sweet. I wish I had a great broody hen. I have had very poor luck and I fear a more than a few dead chicks. Here is Blueberry with some of her babies! By this afternoon, two of the bantam EEs had come out. This adorable d'Uccle popped her head out just long enough to see what mama was chirping about, then she disappeared again.
These two were eating and drinking well, and hang out at the front.
Blueberry chose this tiny little nest box, I will move her and the chicks to the broody coop once they are finished hatching.

Blueberry looks a lot like my Bluebelle, the Am/Au cross, who is in with a splash Am rooster and is burying her eggs under the grass- I want to put them under the Australorp who is Not Patient and wants to be setting NOW but I need to have a grand shuffling about of chickens before I can do that. Of course I spent Wednesday going to Seattle with my son for an early Mother's Day/Birthday treat, and yesterday made a run to Oregon with my daughter for wedding shoes and fabric for a petticoat to go under her wedding dress, and had to do chores early and late both times. And now I have to stop breaking in my fancy new shoes and go tend to the sheep before I have lunch, bother. Here is Blueberry with some of her babies! LOL, turkeys or bantams - which would you choose? Happy Mother's Day!Happy Mother's day to all you Mothers!I'm getting that "I wish I had some chicks" thing going on. We have had good luck with the pasture growing again, so maybe. . . we are hatching some for a BYC person, and I'm hoping she will come and get them AS SOON AS THEY HATCH or I will definitely be in trouble, specially with the little d'uccles!
Off now, wine bottling time, and then a bit of shopping. Have a great day, dad's too!
Can you imagine pioneer women trying to do all that? We probably work just as hard, just different.Blueberry looks a lot like my Bluebelle, the Am/Au cross, who is in with a splash Am rooster and is burying her eggs under the grass- I want to put them under the Australorp who is Not Patient and wants to be setting NOW but I need to have a grand shuffling about of chickens before I can do that.
