Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Friend of mine had a dog afraid of storms. My old schipperke thought hurricanes were the best time to take off to play and make me chase after her. During thunderstorms she'd always try and get my friends dog to come out of hiding and play. Friends dog was more relaxed during the storms when Fiery was there. I've heard that the Thundershirts do help them during storms if they are afraid.

Thunder shirts do nothing and cost a lot. Putting them on my dogs does nothing at all to them. it's just a tight dog shirt is all it is. Putting pressure on the dogs ribs and chest which is similar to how they feel when another dog mounts them to dominantly hump them.
My dogs are fine. They just don't like going outside when it's wet out. And zeus hid because it's his first thunder storm. he's 13 weeks old. there is still thunder here and the dogs are playing and fine. I think it was just that the first hit of thunder scared them. I even jumped it was loud.

Hi all,

Happy Mother's Day Everyone!

We have a 6+ month purebred cuckoo maran rooster that we need to find a new home for. Unfortunately, our next door neighbor doesn't appreciate his singing nearly as much as we do! We have raised him on scratch and peck feed, organic chicken scraps, and lots of loving. He walks a fine line between being a friendly awesome bird and being a guard rooster ... he'll eat out of our hands but he will also try to attack us when we get too close to 'his' coop. He is a great rooster and we are sad to see him go! We are asking $30.

Thanks! Hope everyone had a great day!

I've attempted to attach a photo below. Oh, and we are just north of Seattle in Shoreline, btw!

Peace,
Cate

Are you sure they weren't aliens or snakes?

I don't like bigggg worms, they creep me out. Aren't they called night crawlers?
I've heard of the giant sized worms, but I also heard you almost never see them because they live pretty deep underground. That's so cool that you saw some! Personally, I am with CarolynF and get completely creeped out by big squiggly things....
It wasn't someone going to fight him, there are birds bred specifically for fighting and a Marans isn't one of them. If they were going to use him as a "punch" or training bird for a real fighting bird, they can get them really cheap at the local auctions, and wouldn't pay that much for one that wouldn't last long. I think you missed out on a good sale!
Sadly, I have to agree.
And so the rain returns.
Hard driving rain here in loveable RockChester. The chooks have given up and gone back into the coop, even thought the run is covered the sideways rain they don't like. They don't like it one bit.

Should get busy with inside work but really don't feel like it. sigh.
Need stuff at the store, but don't feel like going. sigh

I feel your pain!

Sometimes there just isn't enough energy/desire to do everything we feel we should do.
Anyone else getting crazy weather? I don't mind the rain but it rains then the sun is out i go try to do some work in the yard and it starts raining again. And now i think i just heard some thunder... yep dogs are hiding under my chair it was thunder.
Rain, sun, a little thunder, rinse and repeat. I like it.

But, I've lived here all my life. Maybe that makes a difference.

I used to work with/for a couple dog behaviorists, and from what they taught, people's dogs will look to their owners (the dominant, pack leader) for how to react. If the owner is calm and doesn't baby the dog, or freak out themselves (lol, I sorta used to), and shows the dog by ignoring the storm that everything is fine, the dogs will generally calm down too. So, they don't try to calm the dog or show sympathy, instead they do something normal like play with toys with him, or groom him, or whatever is usual to do. Maybe that will help someone? It has done wonders with my dogs anyways!

My goose couple is instead I think two females who are sharing a big, bifurcated nest. It explains the excessive amount of eggs in the original nest, and now they are sharing the eggs. LOL. They are really gentle with each other, it's very sweet.

Distraction and normal routine work very well when dogs are alarmed.  Having a treat handy and having them sit calmly and then praising and rewarding helps them too.

There's some great herbal calming things out there too.  There is a plug in pheromone defuser, Homeopet makes two strengths of anxiety herbal remedies, and Bach's Rescue remedy spray can be used on dogs and cats as well.

Hi everyone!
I'm in Redmond, and I'm very new to chickens (though lots of animal experience... dogs, cats, and horses, mostly). I've been reading and planning for six months or so, and finally brought home 4 pullets two weeks ago. They are 8 weeks old now. My new coop is being delivered tomorrow; I'm excited! I was going to convert our shed to a coop, but my husband vetoed at the last minute, so I had to scramble to find a coop. I'm hopeful the transition to the coop will go well! I've been using a covered giant wire dog crate until now.

Anyways, just wanted to say hi!

My husband made a feeder for the flock. It is designed so they have to step on the lower platform to lift the cover and gain access to the feed. The chickens can't scratch the food out because they need to weigh down the platform to access their food. It is almost too pretty to put outside but I am looking forward to seeing it in action. I got silkie chickens today so they may get to try it before the chicks since the chicks may not be heavy enough to operate it yet.

Hello and WELCOME Relax, everything will OK. How big is the coop? Will they have access to a free range area or will they have a run?

thats a first... I will have to make sure and tell my dog and my friends dogs to stop being calm when they wear their shirts during a storm, as they do nothing for them. and last time I bred any dogs they were not mounted by the ribs and chest... Thunder shirts do work for many dogs, you can even just use your own t shirt, the concept is the same as swaddling a baby. for some its a secure feeling.

let us know how well that works, I considered something like that to stop free feeding the rats. nasty things, would a rat be heavy enough to open it?
