Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

just finally able to sign in to BYC again, dunno why I couldn't for the last couple of years but anyway ...

my chickens came from Del's ... from a hatchery in New Mexico I believe, they were labeled as Americanas ... yes ... there is an I in Americana .. just Easter Eggers by a different name ...

great hens ! (and yes, one great rooster in the supposedly-sexed bin) -- I had six hens to begin with and each of them laid a slightly different color or size of egg so I knew whose was whose ... one pink, one olive drab, and four of various shades of blue-green ...

while we were gone for a few months, DS left the run door open a few times, supposedly ALL the chickens were gone (yes including the roo) .. with piles of feathers all over our yard and the next door neighbor's ...

but, amazingly, we still have one hen!

going to check around the area, see if anyone else has an Easter Egger or two, to add to my "flock" since of course she's lonely ... of course will quarantine ...

I do like this style of chicken .. sturdy, good layer, doesn't go broody, am sure the hatchery breeds for good survivability, instead of pure strains ...

and I'd like a rainbow of eggs in my basket again ...

I have some AmerAUcanas (Lavender) and an Olive Egger, but they are just chicks. Mine are all pretty sturdy birds. And, like you , I love the coloured eggs! (If you are interested in the chicks, pm me)

Thanks for the responses so far. I am really hoping to help this teacher out. She lives in southern Seattle, near Renton. Any nearby Backyarders that can help her with some fertile eggs? Breed is not important...
Thanks!
Alexander

I have BBS English Orpingtons, BBS Silkies, and Australian Spotted ducks so I have an abundance of fertile eggs that I am hatching right now. I also travel from Covington to Seattle three days a week. As a former teacher I am always willing to help teachers with educational projects. I just sold two dozen Easter Egger eggs for cheap because they are fertilized by my Orpington roosters and we have more than we can eat right now. I don't hatch crossbreed chickens but the eggs are fertile if someone else wants to deal with crossbred chickens. I have more Easter Egger eggs that I have not put in the refridgerator yet so I would prefer to donate them if there are no plans for what to do with the chicks beyond hatching them.

not too sure my 2+ year old hen would handle chicks .. no way to have them in the house the way we are set up now, so would have to get chicks who can handle outdoor temperatures ... I think our "last frost" date is still a month away, tends to get a bit colder here because we get the breeze down the river from Mt Rainier ...

used to be someone with Marans and a few EEs, about a mile away -- someone in that same vicinity has been posting a lot on Craigslist so I may drive over that way and see what all they have ...

gradually getting my energy back from cancer surgery last year ...

let me see what I can find out -- dealing with four months of essentially-no-housework around here so chickens are not Priority One ... but I admit that the prospect of a lavender Ameraucana is awfully tempting

I have blue and green mutt eggs EExBCMx? which so far have been 100% fertile. I'm in Shelton, can take them to Olympia if someone heading north can meet me there.

Thank you both for generosity! I knew I could count on this forum to pull through. Sorry it took some time to respond, I am just getting back to work after vacation.

Lutefisk - It is incredibly generous of you to offer to drive these to Olympia. It looks like that is still a bit of a drive from where the teacher lives, but I really appreciate the offer of help.

Duck Drover- With you traveling to Seattle so often, this would certainly work out well. I will reach out to the teacher and confirm that she is comfortable giving out her email so that you can work out the logistics. She will be setting the incubator the week of April 28th (maybe May 1st). I think she is going to be VERY excited!

I will also try to keep every one updated with the progress on how this goes.

As a side note: My heart goes out to anyone who was affected by the mudslides. I cannot imagine what those communities are going through right now...

Candled my eggs, 2 have ring of death and 7 are doing great. The two chicks i got free the other day are doing great and make up for the two ring of death eggs :D
Actually I know better then to count my chickies before they hatch, crossing my fingers on the rest of the eggs though.

Some of my winter Easter Egger chicks may be laying by then. I have eggs that are two shades of green, one more pastel and the other a bit more olive, and some beautiful blues. Back when I first started raising Easter Egger chickens, the hatcheries were calling them Araucana or Aracauna and the nickname for them was Easter Egger. That was before there was anything registered so I thought they were their own breed at that time. Now I know that what I like best is the mutt chickens developed by the hatcheries rather than the show chickens raised by breeders so I will always get my Easter Egger chickens from the hatcheries. I don't even need my own rooster since they are so cheap to buy that I don't need to hatch my own. I am not sure what they will look like crossed with an Orpington but so many people just want colorful chicken eggs without being concerned about chicken show standards that I imagine they will still have a purpose as a backyard mix.
