Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hey and howdy WA peeps!
Been a long time!
Hope all of you and your birds are doing great.
There are so many new peep on here these days. :)
Just thought I'd pop in to say Hi.

We had a broody that hatched 4 last month. That infected us with the hatching bug. Somehow the incubator soon became filled with 21 eggs.

I'm doing well. Getting back to my old energy levels finally. I didn't realize how long that would take. I haven't had my scan yet this year but am scheduled so I should know soon if I am still clean.
I will be able to pop in and out now and again to say hi and see how everyone is doing.
I just got busy with starting to homeschool my kids through HS. It was daunting at first, but, I think I am getting into a rhythm.

Anyway, it's good to talk at you again!

Anything exciting happening? Any chicken shows coming up?

Thanks and welcome back! Folks have been talking about showing at the Mother Earth News fair in Puyallup ( think it is late May or early June). The big April show got cancelled.

I have 2 white Ameraucana Roos out of the 6 that hatched on Valentines day. Normally they would go into the stew pot, but I let my friend name them since they were born on his birthday. His wife made me promise not to eat the boys. So I am putting them out there if anyone is interested. We are in the Bonney Lake area, the are almost 8 weeks now. Eggs were from rfuzzybuttpoultry in Oregon and have been raised on Scratch and Peck.

Re: The little one you are worried about. I am beyond brand new at this, but I've heard/read about a few things on hear. Some say that chicks can be weak from the hatching/travel of getting home and need a little boost to help them. I've read of ppl using sugar water, Gatorade, ACV and a whole slew of other things. I've also read about chicks not being able to support themselves cuz their legs are weak and basically when the try to stand they just sprawl out from under them instead. I've read of ppl using hair ties, Band-Aids, string and a number of other items to keep their legs together so that the chicks stay up right and walk better.

You may be a pro at chicks and don't need any input from me (and my advice could be way off), but I figured I'd throw in my 2 cents since it's late and I'm bored. Hope you don't mind! =P

The little one that I was concerned about is fine now. After getting a couple doses of pedialyte he was up and running. We also got some younger chicks (1 day olds) and separated the little ones with them for 24 hours. After a good nights sleep they were put back with the party chicks and are doing fine. We are setting up a second brooder though because we have more than we originally planned to have (chicken math at work) and we have several that are big enough that they are spending time on the branch and flapping their lil' wings.

The new chicks are farm raised (got them from a guy at work) and raised on Sphagnum Peat Moss. We all of the chicks on it and the new chicks taught the ones we had to scratch around and find the food. Now we have more of it on the floor than in the brooder but they are all thriving and doing well.

DH is building a coop in the back and it's turning out much better than we thought. He has an endless supply of pallets at his old work (currently on disability while starting dialysis and awaiting a kidney transplant) and we are using them. He raised the coop off the ground and is using the pallets for the floor, walls and roof. Siding we are still deciding on. The floor is going to have hardware cloth stapled to it, on top of that will be plywood and on top of that will be linoleum which will then be covered in bedding. He is building nest boxes on the side and all will have animal proof locks, probably padlocks. Under the coop in the middle (where it will be protected from rain/wind) will be where we dump our ash from our firepit and our fireplace.

Overall got a lot done and the chicks are growing fast!
