Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Two newest chicks. Partridge silkies. There are seven more zipping.

Looks like our turkeys hatched two chickens. The hen is still sitting on a nest full of mixed eggs. When they peep she lays down to protect and warm them. The tom is keeping all other birds at a distance.

Hey... John Kitsap... Welcome back, long time no see. I never did get over to your place, but think about it any number of times as I drive past the pub and the post office! How is it going? Looks like you're planning Thanksgiving dinner. :)

Hi everybody. I'm up here in Buckley and am trying to connect with local chicken enthusiasts. I have chickens and ducks, 3 crazy dogs and one thankfully very tolerant husband. Not counting chickens at the moment. Have a wild assortment of breeds and types. Is there anyone near me?

Hi There and Welcome!

I have some family over by you but sadly we are at least an hour away. I know there are some byc folks around there but I haven't seen them posting here recently. But.... stick around and get acquainted! Are you planning to go to the Mother Earth News Fair in Puyallup at the end of the month? There's a poultry show as part of it and it's a nice time to say hello to some of the local chicken folks and see a lot of very nice birds. The fair part of it is quite interesting, too. Different than a usual fair with lots more opportunity to learn new stuff.

Hi all, I haven't posted since my first day here a few weeks ago. I finally got my table saw assembled and learned how to use it so I cut the lumber for the coop today. I got everything cut and started building the run. I decided to make a small, stationary coop and a detachable run that I can easily move around my huge lawn. Am I correct in thinking that the run needn't be huge if there are only 3 hens and it will be in a different spot every day, or moved throughout each day? It's like a tractor I guess and those always seem to be fairly small compared to stationary runs. I also plan on letting them in to a 10x10 foot pen (4 feet high with bird netting on top) sometimes, and I'll let them free range eventually once they know where home is. Is that all bonkers or am I on the right path to spoiling my girls? My goal is to keep them happy while avoiding any part of my yard getting scratched to death.

For good measure, here they are at nearly 6 weeks old. I put them out in an up-side-down baby playpen while I cleaned the brooder and cut lumber and they loved it

My dog is going to be the one to watch around the birds. She is a hunter at heart. I hope the pictures show up, I'm having trouble with uploads lately.

That's nice that your birds will get fresh grass all the time and I think you're on the right track. You didn't say what size you're planning, but the size is dependent on a few things including the breed of the chickens because some are more docile than others, and how much you'd like your birds to be able to move around. During the first summer I found that even though my birds technically had enough room (10 sq ft per bird) I felt better when they could run and play a bit more, and keep out of the other's path. So it's kinda personal. Most of us seem to make changes after having them for a while. My suggestion would be to allow yourself to watch, learn, and grow. Build it bigger than you think you need -- you will probably get a few more before long!
