Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

And I have ANOTHER broody. She got in the nest box last night. She's always been skittish and left when I reached in and touched her. Tonight she doesn't even care if I touch her. So she can sit another day or so while I gather more eggs to put under her.

Excellent! Do you have some chicks for her to foster?

Hi there everyone. Just wanted to let you know incubation appears to be going good see lots of movement in most eggs. I have a couple that seem clear but left them in for now. David was dancing and singing babies growing and hatch soon. Thank you again.. fingers are crossed

Thank you Hinotori,

I took a couple pic last night. Most look like this except for i think 2.

Do they look like they are good, i do see some movement which got us excited.

These were all "dancing" around so anyone tell me how they are they were day 8 in incubation.

And good morning to you also! :welcome Tell us about your chickens!

Thanks. I'm not a chicken mama. I'm looking to get some Ancona ducks soon. For eggs and pets. ( And I am getting ready to raise rabbits for meat and not pets.) I'm just trying to convince my husband that now is the time. He'd rather move and wait and settle in first. But since we don't have a move date, I'm anxious to get started.

Nice setup, thanks for sharing. And I'm glad Tina is getting better, she's very pretty.

I'm not surprised you heard 2 weeks since nothing is cast in concrete. One rule of thumb says 30 days & 30 feet away from any other birds. Another common "rule" is 3 weeks. And I'm sure a lot of people give up at 2 weeks. One reason for longer times is that stress from adjusting to a new environment can weaken their immune system and that "bug" they were previously fighting off might now wins the war. Also the "bugs" on your property are likely different than where the new bird came from. She will have built up an immunity to the bugs in her former location but now she's faced with new strains. (think of traveling to Mexico) The 30 days gives her time to level out, develop any issues that are borderline or new, and then show you the symptoms so you can treat as needed. All animals, by instinct, are going to hide symptoms of sickness as much as possible.

I'm assuming you're treating for internal and external pests twice, the second dose being 10 days after the first.

BTW... that's a very interesting feeder. I haven't seen that design before. Do they have any issues with sticking their head inside to eat? Love the "stairs", too!

Thanks! DH and I talked and decided to keep her quarantined for at least another week or so. Figured we'd let her grow out her feathers more before adding the stress of the other chickens. And, yes we did treat her and gave her 2nd dose. =]

Feeder design I came across here on BYC. So far it seems to work out great. Didn't get any water in it when it rained the other day, I haven't seen any wasted feed spilled on the ground, and the chickens can't get dirt into it. I've seen several eating from it at the same time. No problems getting their heads in (they were hesitant at 1st, but that didn't last long). Occasionally I'll see 2 at one opening and they take turns. Stairs I put in for Tiny Tina to use when she joins the rest. =D Took all of like 10 minutes to make it and it only cost $12 ($4 per elbow). Holds a ton of feed. We filled it up about half way a week ago and it still has food.

I really hope my chickie poos never grow out of evening naptime with me! At 4 weeks they're still small enough to cuddle into my cupped hand and my heart just melts when Ruby stretches her neck out full length and closes her eyes. I imagine eventually they'll be too big to fit on my lap at the same time, but I'm enjoying it while I can. I hope they're both pullets because I'll be hard pressed to send one of them to freezer camp if they're a roo!

Good Morning all. Let me introduce the Lone Ranger ( Wheaten Marans) to you. This little one is 5 days old he / she is the only one to hatch out of 11 eggs shipped from GA. Ranger is hanging out with his other peeps my Blue Coppers who hatched at the same time. I have found a few people in Western WA that have Wheatens and I am hoping to find a few more. Depending if Ranger is a Cockerel or Pullet I am looking to expand to a breeding flock. If anyone has Wheatens they are wanting to sell please let me know. I'd like to find chicks no older than 4 wks so I can try to blend them at some point. Thank you.
