Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Had some new flock members hatch this evening. Only two eggs to make it to hatch. The eggs had been getting quite old since everyone went broody and quit laying.

And I have ANOTHER broody. She got in the nest box last night. She's always been skittish and left when I reached in and touched her. Tonight she doesn't even care if I touch her. So she can sit another day or so while I gather more eggs to put under her.
I am fighting with 4 broody-wannabes right now !!!

Einstein is on his way home.
My lazy vacation is over....back to work.

He complained the day he got there in NorCal (last Sunday) that it was a lovely 104 degrees, and almost killed him.

Then he is driving back from that weather right into this cool drizzly we have now, and tonight is T storms & 70% rain.

Bet he will be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HAPPY to be home !

I had an issue with the temps on the east side of the mountains last weekend and it wasn't any where near 104. I can't imagine how horrid that sudden high temp was for him.

I expect my Silkies to go broody but I have Orpingtons insisting on sitting. I ended up taking the eggs away from the first hen after some of them got broken but then I gave her eggs a week later because she would not leave the nest box. My second broody hen hatched 8 chicks but she lost a few eggs before hatching (I suspect they were clear and then the one that did not hatch was a quitter). I ended up giving another hen eggs today because she has been gathering the nesting eggs under her to sit on. I am glad we built 5 nest boxes on our playhouse converted to a chicken coop because the rest of the hens have to take turns in the remaining two nest boxes. I have the hen with chicks in the nest box with food and water so I can be sure they are all eating and drinking on their own and they can develop a strong bond with their mother before I turn them out. I wish I had a small coop to put her and her chicks in until they are safe from the crows. I normally just hatch chicks in the incubator but I keep running out of space so I decided to use my broody hens.

I had a hen duck lose three ducklings to crowsbefore she left her nest and today she left with two ducklings while another duckling was cheeping and zipping in an egg. Two more eggs look like they could be viable so they went in the hatching incubator but one was rotton so I threw it away. Hopefully I can give her more ducklings tomorrow since I also have some hatching in the incubator. At least she has two babies tonight and hopefully we don't get much rain because she refuses to go under shelter with them.

I really need to come up with a better way to house mamas and babies together but we are strapped for money because we just spent everything we have on an engine replacement on our car (it was in the shop for over a month). Has anyone used camping tents as temporary shelters for birds? I am thinking that a multiple room tent may be just what I need for babies until they can be out in the yard and stay safe from crows.
