Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Congrats to Ashley and Amberjem on the first eggs! Woohoo! Aren't these birds amazing to be laying eggs in this cold weather? My Barred Rock, Roxanne, laid her first egg the week before thanksgiving and has given me 8 eggs in 10 day! My other four pullets seem to be waiting for warmer weather or longer days.

It is crazy that chickens molt during the winter. This is when they need their feathers the most! LOL My Wheaten Marans is just finishing up a 2 month molt and has laid 2 eggs this weekend. They are smaller than usual and a bit of a lighter color, but I won't complain. ;)

woohooo got my first egg :)
Fantastic! Congrats!

Henrietta laid her first egg yesterday! So excited and it just never gets old to open the nestbox lid and find egg(s)!
Wonderful! And I totally agree!

So I need someone to explain to a broody silkie pullet that you actually lay eggs before going broody. She's a mean broody as well. I could feel the bites through the gloves I was wearing.

She obviously didn't read the manual! Why are you keeping a mean broody, I thought that was against the rules?

I think I need to send my girls over to your place for a refresher course!

@Aliciahess They just don't understand! But you can tell us all about it and post as many pics as you'd like, we love it! :)

@CarolynF thanks!
My hen got super mean when she was bloody too. Attacked all three of my dogs(they weigh 30-40lbs) and they ran away. She's great now that the babies hatched out and was a great mommy.

I was curious if anyone in Western-Western-WA had experience with treating bumblefoot. We have a girl who I've been trying to treat topically (foot cleaned, wrapped and packed with neosporin) but it's not getting better. Compared to some of the stuff I've seen online, it's a mild case but I'm nervous to attempt surgery with at least showing someone who has "been there, done that" what we have going on.

This morning she didn't want to come out of the coop, and when I physically put her outside, she was obviously favoring her bumblefoot.

I see the small spot on the pad of her foot, but then there's the larger sore up by her "thumb". Just to be clear, are you treating both?

Sorry, that picture was taken pre-wash. That sore you mention is just mud/crud/stuff and washed right off.
The small sore on the bottom, a slightly swollen pad and her favoring that foot when she walks/stands is the only outward signs that something isn't right.

I've done the surgery. The biggest problem, for me, is keeping the open wound clean and wrapped until it's healed.
When I did the surgery I never found the hard core that is always mentioned, and it involved several places on the bottom of both feet. It was a hen I "inherited" so it had gone further than it should have.

oops, it posted before I was done, so ETA:
@Hinotori has done this more than once with good success. If you look for tutorials with good photos it helps a lot. It's not as hard as it might seem. Keeping the bird still by wrapping in a towel seems to be the biggest thing. The bird doesn't seem to feel the incision.

By the way, are you aware that some neosporin has an ingredient to numb the pain and it's BAD for chickens? It's a "...caine" if memory serves.
