I'd really like to have a Speckled Sussex. I'd like to find a local breeder if anyone knows of one. I had to put down one of my hens this week, my first time, and it was hard.

they were on my list of chickens to get also except I am a bit less inclined when I started reading how much they seem to like to escape

I can only compare the Sussex to the Faverolles - but I really enjoy our girl. She's not as docile as the Favs (she won't let me pick her up without some treats in my hand), but settles in my arms fine once I have a hold on her. She's a good forager and is VERY treat motivated. She's not the alpha hen, but is always the leader on foraging expeditions :)

Aw, sorry you had to say goodbye to one of your hens :(

That speckled Sussex is beautiful. I tried so hard to find jubilee Orpington eggsfor the hatch along...maybe next time. I did get some black copper marans, excited for those.

I don't have Jubilees, yet. I'm excited to get some though. I have Spangles that are absolutely stunning. They're about 8 months old though and I'm waiting for my first egg. I almost can't believe that the first thing I think when I wake up in the morning is to run out to the coops and see who laid an egg. I've got 27 laying age hens. I have no idea who laid the eggs but I still make myself crazy wondering about it :)
