Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I love it when people act like they know everything when all of their info is either made up or wrong lol

Man, you got a doozy set of questions! You should totally write a book!

In various conversations about chickens, I have been repeatedly and forcefully told that "If the eggs are brown, that means they're organic!" or "Brown eggs are waaay better for you!"
Where does this stuff come from?!

Maybe next near with every wreath purchase, folks can take home a chicken leg! Just one leg per person though!

I think every school should have some sort of mandatory Farm to Table course. Such a huge disconnect between our bodies, brains, and our food these days it seems.

Probably a cockerel, so I suppose I should change his name to Pip, but I've tried and it just won't stick!

I thought the same thing. I bought one for about $70 plus $15 for shipping. It was pretty easy to use and my first attempt I hatched 20 chicks. I can hardly wait for warmer weather so I can hatch more. I figure it is a hobby that is going to have some minor expenses. The incubator was cheaper than golf clubs or buying a saddle for the horse. LOL

If you can't find any chicks close to home, you might just have to make a road trip. There are a lot of nice breeders all over Puget Sound. I'd drive over 3 hours if I could get my hands on some Wheaten Marans eggs. The idea of shipping eggs (or chicks) does not appeal to me either.

Has anyone had a good experience with Baxter Barn? Don't they just buy their birds from hatcheries anyway? Someone I know bought some Marans and Ameraucana pullets from them and they all ended up being mutts. Cute birds but not what they paid for.

We got all our chicks from Baxter Barn last year (they'll be a year old end of January) and they're all healthy. Two buff orps, 1 Americana (which is actually an EE) and one sliver laced wyandotte. I would have continued to buy feed from the guy, but I found after four trips there that he's just not a nice guy. Clearly has too much going on because he's grumpy as hell. I get my feed from another source now.

What a beauty!  Will you be able to keep him if he is a boy?

Thank you!
While I can have roosters, not sure the neighbors would appreciate me having 5 of them :( I'd love to keep them all though but not sure it's practical as just a backyard for-fun flock keeper.

I have a bantam cochin roo for my frizzle girls already, and in this batch of Orp chicks it's looking like 4/11 are cockerals (2 Jubilee, 1 lavender, 1 black). Probably just end keeping the black one.

Hoping when/if the time comes they will be bought as pets or by someone looking for a nice start to backyard Orp flock if they turn out nice.
They are from Papas Poultry and the Jubilees are second generation from the ones he got from Gisbrecht's.

Gonna hold them a bit longer and see what's what :)

Christmas tree farm is closed! Woo Hoo!

We had the coops over by the tree farm office so people could see the bunny, chickens, guineas, and turkeys. I was not prepared for some of the questions/comments that people would have about my birds!

The eggs are blue(or green)! Do you put food coloring in their water? Yes. Next time I'm having them lay all green and red for Christmas.

Can a chicken be parted out? I only want a leg. They were trying to get me to take a leg off a live chicken! NOOO! Get away from my birds! They aren't cars!

Can I buy that chicken? (Pointing at one of my best daily olive egg layers) I told the lady $30 if she absolutely had to have her. Then she asked if she could butcher it here. Uh no. I thought she wanted a layer! Needless to say I did NOT sell her my chicken.

What's wrong with your turkeys? Why are they white? Well they're royal palms. So their feathers are black and white. There was a whole conversation about how turkeys are only brown.... I gave up. His logic was so confusing I finally just looked at DH and said he's right they must be albinos... Even though they have black feathers!

There were MANY others like someone asked how my Wyandot lost its comb and why does that chicken have and extra toe (spur) and my favorite.... "How can you eat fertilized eggs?!?? I would never eat a baby chicken!"

So glad the tree farm is closed. Next year I'm putting up info signs like at the zoo.... Maybe that'll take out a few of the interesting ones...

My Oh My!

Pip is wonderfully appropriate! I might steal it.... someday.

I have customers who only want my green or blue eggs because they taste better. I just say "ok" and sell them. :)

Charge them double!

Tonight is the first night my chicks are sleeping loose in the coop. Until now they've been locked in an ex-pen in the coop at night to protect them from the big girls. Just checked and all 11 were sleeping in a clump in the corner so I went in and put each on the roosting bars. You could almost see their faces light up, like "Oh!!!! THAT'S what these are for!" lol
The goofballs play on the roosting bars through out the day and had one in their ex-pen. Hopefully they get the hang of it after a few nights, although I did enjoy picking each one up for a goodnight snuggle--They are so floofy!
