Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I was getting 40 pound bags of feed for $10 or $11.  Now a 50 pound bag is $17.  That is quite a jump in price.  I'm not really sure if it is a winter time thing, or if they are blaming it on something else.

This spring I'm going to start selling hatching eggs.  You can definitely bring in more that way than selling eggs for eating.

I'm bringing in about $50 per dozen and have been sending out orders every week for the last couple months. I just sent a shipment of chicks to Massachusetts that arrived healthy but I won't ship any more chicks until spring. My problem is I go though a LOT of feed lol.

What kind are you getting? that seems really expensive!

Quote: What kind of eggs are you selling? I'm going to be breeding Marans and possibly olive eggers or turkens in spring. I expect good prices, but not near $50 per dozen. Maybe someday. :)

I'm going through about 200 pounds of feed per month at the moment. With my hatching addiction I'm sure that will increase very soon.

I'm buying Purina and excel feeds. When I switched to a different brand almost every one of my hens quit laying. A month ago the Layena was $10.99 a bag. I went to two different stores last weekend and paid $18 for 50 pounds of flock raiser and $13.50 for 40 pounds of Layena pellets. Ouch!

Right now I'm only selling Mottled / Spangled Orpington eggs and chicks. My others are on a hiatus lol. I haven't been able to keep up with orders. Right now I have a waiting list until the middle of January.

I use Layena at $13.99 for #40, All Breed at $12.99 (it just got lower from $13.29)for #50, and Wheat at $6.00 for #50. that equals $12.16 for #50 of feed.
And when you calculate all the gain from the eggs($3 a dozen) I'm starting to make a profit!!!

what do you use with the wheat?

Good news, all chicks went to the coop this evening and no chicks were clumped in the nest boxes.

Bad news, they were clumped in the corner by the door. Put them each on a roosting bar AGAIN tonight. Hoping they get the hang of it!
