Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Quick question, BYC buddies:

I'm looking for some vining plants to plant around my run. Ideally, I'd love the vines to completely take over the run. They would have to be safe for chickens to ingest, should they try to eat them.

Pretty flowers are a plus, but not necessary.

What kind of vine plants thrive in this climate?

Thanks!

A thornless raspberry would also be great. Thornless for people, yummy for everyone!

I live on main street in Hoquiam (Sumner Ave)! You can have the best of both worlds here in Aberdeen! Many have goats, chickens, even horses! Yet, are on the bus lines! As far as the vegetation is concerned... just do a cottage garden! Most of my flowers in front yard will be either medicinal or eddible! Throw in some berry bushes and a cute chicken coop and there's not much more I would have on a small farm! The veggie garden is in the backyard!

That's an excellent plan! I want to look into some medicinal plants. My mother grew up around Hoquiam, by the way. My family and I spent some time up there on our way back from charter fishing last fall.

The last two weeks have been the pits. The only thing good that has happened is I was able to set an incubator close to full with Partridge Penedesenca, Cream Legbar, and a few Olive Egger eggs. I candled them tonight (10 days of incubating) and most are developing. Hope all goes well for the next 12 or so days.

I will not make it to the Monroe show unless I can convince myself it is okay to go. My hubby was out cutting a tree down on March 1st and the trunk of the tree traveled sideways and got him from the waist up. He was lucky as it broke his neck at the C1/C2 joint. He is able to move his hands and feet, and is up moving, but, he is still in Harbor View Hospital in the rehab dept. I feel like I should stay home and not spend any extra money at this point in time. Maybe I'll change my mind in the morning.

So.... everyone else, please have a good time and report back here so I feel sorrier for myself. ha ha ha ha.... Do have fun. I'll be thinking of being there.

OH!!!! I'm SO sorry to hear about that! Taking down trees can be so tricky! Scares me every time. I hope he heals well and quickly! I can recommend a good chiropractor that specializes in working with the Atlas and Axis at the top of the spine. There are very few that will even touch that region, for good reason.

@elizmartin I'm so glad I found you before you had to dash! It was a good start to my day. And I was able to get Janelle's girls out and into the carrier without any issues. They turned out to be very compliant. Having their head tucked under my arm really helped, like you said. He hen took Champion Large Fowl!!!! She picked them up this morning and was STILL grinning from ear to ear! It was a huge win for her. The judge told us that it was the best Barnie he'd ever seen as a judge. Wow!

There were SO many people I didn't get to meet, and even so I talked to so many others that I didn't even see all the birds - as usual!

I got my 2 RIR babies from @budsbirds and I'm loving them. I felt sorry for the little buggers having to put up with all the noise and commotion all day.

Sure hope you'll be at the Chehalis show in the fall!

ETA: Kim didn't show any birds. She pulled out at the last minute. I think she said they starting molting (?).

Greetings all, we're fairly new to chickens and have raised our current three Wyandottes from wee chickies. This is our first experience however with a broody hen. We have been considering adding 2-3 more hens to the flock and thought perhaps we could 'save' 2 birds with one stone. Can we just provide fertile eggs for her? Is there anyone in the Vancouver area that has any Wyandotte eggs for sale? I'd like to let this little lady try her hand at chicks.

Thanks!

Sorry I couldn't talk longer Amberjem, I really had to go eat. I was getting pretty shaky at that point and had let the blood sugar get a bit to low. As my husband keeps telling me, that's my own fault when I do that.

I do hope those plants do good for you
ya I know what you mean I was a lil loopy I hadnt eaten that day I got home exhausted and didnt eat then either ...finally got something this morning.........lil distracted with chickies hatching here :)

ME glad too….Janelle's girls WERE amazing. Congratulations to her…..nice size, conformation and bright feather definition…..I know both her competitors one who has been breeding Barnies for along time.….She had blue too?????

RIR are wonderful, had a few once and they were the only ones that laid year around.

I should look it up to see what the date is for the Calendar….Anyone know?

I want blue faverollies

My silkies didn't do the best, but I think even the older one was a month or two younger than I thought. She ended up with reserve variety.

I'm kicking myself for not washing up Louie and one of his older hens and taking them. They would have done well in the blue wheaten ameraucana.

It was nice meeting you yesterday Hinotori and thanks so much for the plants! Sorry you're silkies didn't do as well as you'd hoped - did the judges give you any comments so you know what to improve on? I noticed that they did that on some of the entries. I wish I could have stuck around to meet Carolyn and Elizmartin, but my son was antsy to get home

I don't know Janelle and wish I would have paid more attention to her birds, but you're right about her competitor who has ben breeding for a while. I loved his blue laced Barnie roo! I had never seen that variety before. So many beautiful birds yesterday!
