Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I was also going to ask how old they are. My 9 week old babies are still in the pool in the family room. I want to start leaving them outside, but it has been below freezing all week. Right now it is 48, so I'm hoping it stays warm this weekend and they can start going out at night.

Today I got the first egg from my 22 week old pullets. One of the 17 week olds did the squat when I tried to pick her up. They are getting red faces so it can't be too long.
Mine at a month old would fly right out of a wading pool !
I have to have a chicken wire lid on the brooders.
Yesterday I found older babies running around in the younger babies brooder (as the brooders are side by side separated by a plywood wall, about 2 1/2 feet tall)
So I had to put a lid on the little boogers to keep them in their own brooder.
They are like popcorn at this age...sailing right over the wall....................

Quote: I put my chick feeders on stacks of 2x4 or 2x6.
As they grow, they learn to scratch at the feed & pull it out with their beaks (shoveling it out) looking for a choice speck to eat.
Some will get in the feeders & scratch all the feed out.
If you can, get a feeder that makes this bad habit impossible...it will save you alot of wasted feed.
I stack up 2-2x6s and put the feeder & water on top.
This keeps alot of the flying wood shavings out of the food & water also.
As they grow, I then give them feed from a hanging feeder, and raise it higher as they grow.
This keeps their feets outta their food !

CL: Thanks for the "BIGGER DUCK" lead. I will be placing my mini sebie order with Dave Holderread since I can't hatch those goosey eggs for the life of me.

Dave has some cool looking adults. I shall be on their wait list. 6 month wait...

I have a lot of eggs in my bator ...also have some 9 week old babies and a few 5 day olds. None are black, but all are cute. Some might look super cool in diapers. I have tri color babies too

Just nothing shiney and black lately. I did hatch out a few "holstein ducks"

and a few "pinto ducks" too. Every hatch is truly like a "box of chocolates".

Are they the pipe warmers? I have a few of those. Can they be placed on the bottom of pots? I should try and bury it in my green house beds.
In my green house I ran some in the soil, and some above the soil, to warm the air.
Combined with the row cover, it keeps the warmer air in with the plants instead of floating away.

In the hot farmes, you find a window, and build the frame to the size of the window.
1/2" strofoam board in stapled to the enterior, and the coils of pipe tape are laid ion the floor, and plug it in so it gets warm & then it will stay moulded like you wanrt, and slowly at sand til there is about 4" of sand.
The frame should face south...
Be careful of sunny days, it can get very hot in there very fast, when the sun comes out !

With this set up, I can grow basil & other greens all winter long, even when it is snowing.

After watching mama hen with her new chicks today, I just have to laugh at myself a bit. First time I brought chicks home from the store I was SO paranoid about temperature and food, and and and etc etc etc.. It's probably upper 60s, and the 3 day old chicks are all outside running around already.. Eating rocks and bits of clover and who knows what else. I think this is a case of 'less-is-more' when it comes to raising chicks. (Video coming soon) EDIT: Video!
So adorable! Wish I could hatch babies of our own. We live in city limits so, no roosters. I could still hatch...but it would quickly turn into chicken math I'm afraid

Quote: Oh they fly! That is why we have the pool covered with bird netting. Hard to explain how we do it, but I can look for a pic. They usually only sit on the back of the couch with the cat after they fly out, but one of them has tried to fly "through" the window a couple of times so they only get to come out for about 30 minutes in the evening.

Hello everyone. I'm new here and I live outside Spokane, Wa on about 5 acres. Searching for Serama breeders brought me here as I am having a very hard time locating them up here. If anyone knows of someone who sells them, I would appreciate any help to point me in the right direction :)

Hey there, littleredwagon. Glad you joined us.

My babies are now 8 weeks old. How much longer do I need to keep them on Chick Starter feed? I'm almost to the bottom of the sack and will need to go out and get some more feed in about a week, maybe less. How long do I need to keep them on that?

When do I change their feed and to what?
Thanks, everyone.

I got a grower to layer feed from the feed store. The owner said I could feed that up until they start laying and then switch to a layer feed. So that's my plan.
