Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Quote: So, I need to get some shell when I put the chicks on Flock Raiser? Would I mix them together or put it in a separate feeder? Do I need to put out any grit now, too? We have their run on the grass right now so there's no real dirt or rocks there for them to eat. So many questions for this first-timer. Hopefully, one of these days I'll know what I'm doing and be able to help others. Thanks again for your help.

After watching mama hen with her new chicks today, I just have to laugh at myself a bit. First time I brought chicks home from the store I was SO paranoid about temperature and food, and and and etc etc etc.. It's probably upper 60s, and the 3 day old chicks are all outside running around already.. Eating rocks and bits of clover and who knows what else. I think this is a case of 'less-is-more' when it comes to raising chicks. (Video coming soon) EDIT: Video!
What beautiful chickens and adorable chicks diving through the grass blades! I love them so much ;0 makes me wanna have my girls be chicken mamas

Question. So I have my chicks and I was told that they were vaccinated already (at least the older ones). The ones I got from a friend, I trust. The others I don't. Is there any side effects of vaccinating twice? I just don't trust people.

You can use any 20% protein feed now.  I use Purina Flock Raiser.  While I have littles everybody gets it but I put out plenty of shell for the layers since the feed has none.  When your littles get close to laying you can switch over to layer, or as many people do, stick with the flock raiser with shell on the side.  The young ones will begin to eat the shell when their body is ready for it.

I always have shell available to layers in a separate container. Their body tells them when and how much to eat. Even when they're fed layer feed, that has calcium as an ingredient, they will eat extra shell.

Chicks don't need shell. Only layers need shell. But if you have shell in a separate feeder the chicks won't eat it until they are about ready to star laying.

Yes give them grit if they are eating anything other than commercial feed. The grit is what's needed to grind up the food they eat. Their digestive system doesn't use acid like ours does.

How old are the chicks? It won't hurt them to be vaccinated twice, but after a certain age it would probably be irrelevant, especially if they have already been exposed to the outdoors or other chickens.

Hello all! I'm hoping to find some ccl eggs or chicks, and French bcms. Does anyone have any in Snohomish County that they are selling? I am after bright sky blue eggs from the legbars and the darker the better for the marans :)

Hello everyone. I'm new here and I live outside Spokane, Wa on about 5 acres. Searching for Serama breeders brought me here as I am having a very hard time locating them up here. If anyone knows of someone who sells them, I would appreciate any help to point me in the right direction :)

Hi- I am interested in knowing this as well please for the greater Snohomish County area (closer to Everett/Bothell). Thanks!
I do but I'm in the SW part of the state...I know there are a couple more in this group but I don't believe they frequent this page anymore.
