Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I can hear the rooster that is a quarter mile away. Apparently so can my boys as it gets them to crowing as well. My husband says he can only hear it if it's a really good day with little traffic and that I'm just a weirdo with good ears, though. I'm not near enough anyone to care here.
Atmosphere, trees, hills all seem to affect noise…I live about 600 feet from the community club and can hear the party noises often, less during the day, much during the stillness of night and much more than the neighbors closer…. The neighbors across the street hear my roosters, but next door not so much.

Maybe it would be helpful to know there is often something wrong with chicks that don't survive saving you from the hurt of losing them later….Because stragglers in the bator don't hatch but you know they were alive from their peeps i monitor them closely and do help some (slowly because some not are not ready) BECAUSE, the more you open the bator the more the right hatching moisture atmosphere changes hurting their ability to hatch.

I monitor them as well, giving them time to hatch on their own of course- if they don't fully hatch within the next day or more then I've learned they can't - usually it's due to they are stuck and can't either a wing is in the way or sometimes a foot- we've had a few hatches that way- then they end too exhausted to keep at it and that's where I step in or they end up too big with no room- tho each chick that I've assisted given those circumstances has lived and are healthy, just with a little rough start- only ones I've lost is when I first hatched some and did try to save one that didn't pip - I learned my lesson the hard way there because it was oxygen deprived to a point there was no survivabilty in it and one that pipped in fluid- so luckily I've learned when and who I can save with no problems later on - I know not a lot of people agree with that, but if they made the pip stage and try but for some reason get stuck on a wing or leg and can't finish then they are still healthy enough to survive to live a happy life which most ours have and are going on 4 years old this year - it's all a learning process for sure that isn't an instant thing either 4 years later still learning knew things I wish I knew in the beginning - as someone put it " you can read up all you want, but when you actually do it, new things happen or everyone has their own opinion on what to do or not to do". I have found that out to be true in some cases.

That's funny....we had a neighbor who had chickens and a rooster who wouldn't stop crowing....it didn't matter if it was 2:00 or 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning, if he wanted to crow, he would crow. Every morning, day after day after day at 2:00 and 3:00 and 4:00, he would crow. I finally told my husband if he didn't talk to the neighbor's that day, I would be paying them a visit and we would be having chicken stew the next day. City ordinances said either "no roosters" or "no chickens" but they had they anyways. Husband did talk to them...they did get rid of the rooster. Was I ever glad.

Now we a some people several houses away from us that have a rooster but I can not hear him through my bedroom walls and when I go outside and hear him crow, it brings a smile to my face and I enjoy listening to him.

My fiancé just told me that he saw a brown weasel looking animal a couple blocks from our house. I've been warned about them before but I never thought they were around. Should I be taking extra care for these kinds of critters? Are they nocturnal? He saw it during the day though... ;0

Weasels from what I understand will go after the eggs or chickens if they can find their way into a coop. I personally haven't dealt with them as my main worry is Coyotes and neighbors dogs for now, since our property is not fully fenced yet. I would probably double check to make sure there's no way a weasel could gain access just in case. If it was me, I would ... better to be safe than sorry and wake up to devastation. But I'm just paranoid about those things.... death and I don't play nice.

If they are nocturnal I have no real problem closing the coop at night, they wouldn't be able to get in, but the run isn't weasel proof... would they climb over the hardware cloth netting stuff? it's actually just deer fencing right now keeping them in but we could upgrade..

I think a lot of houses aren't very well insulated. That lets sound in. As much as this tiny little junk of a house we live in is old, it keeps sound and temperature out better than any house I've ever been in. Has to do with the way they built it in 1900 and that when vinyl siding was put on, they put the foam and siding over the shakes. I can only hear the boys when I have all sounds off or I am right next to a window. I do know the boys like to crow at about 1:30 at night when I'm sitting reading. A few crows each between the ameraucana roosters and then back to sleep. Apparently it's the middle of the night check for trouble is my guess since they are in pens a good distance from each other.

Probably take a peek at google and see if you fall prey to issues

Is it like this?
