I just got three lil week old chicks last Monday. The rir is Una, the bigger Welsummer is Nugget, and the smaller Welsummer is Gummi. I gave my roommates a bunch of mealworms to feed the chicks with, and now if you put your hand in the brooder all the little ladies come run over and sit on your hand. They love to cuddle up and ride shoulders and arms around and almost don't want to go back to the box afterwards. I'm so excited to have chickens again!

I should have clarified it better. Way back,... would have to look it up, was either mad cow or foot & mouth….but in the UK there were killing zones around the positive tested farms and negative tested animals, even non cows were destroyed. During all this in the United States, there was a governor in the NE of the US, think it was Minn. or Wisc. or…but they said if they had a case in their state they would destroy all livestock within a 40 mile radius. This was then……Now, today, think it was in Eastern Wa. when the AI outbreak was found in the NE….i read there was door to door checking in the perimeter of the outbreak. The guy in the link in Virginia who was going to have his flock destroyed, had only received mailed eggs from someone in another state that had tested positive after the fact….It hadn't mattered that his flock tested negative.

I am just about 100% sure this one is pure Jersey Giant. BUT it was an unplanned pairing, so, not carefully bred. She's the offspring of siblings who were also the offspring of siblings. I think? Anyhow, I shared these pics with a member of the National Jersey Giant club and she's not too concerned. She's never seen it either, but she suspects the bird will grow out of it. I'll band her tomorrow (when the others are all in pre-caponizing segregation) and we'll see how she does as she grows.
One thing, though, I won't caponize her for this. But if she doesn't grow out of it, I won't breed her either.

You would caponize a female ?

I'm new to chickens, also, and I just love mine.
I have 6 because I had to buy 6. That was the only way the store would sell them.
So, I have 2 RiR, a Black Austerlorp, a Golden Sexlink, a Plymouth Barred Rock, and an Ameracana.
Today, when I went out to their run, my Reds just started clucking to me as if to tell me how hot they were.
They ended up getting a frozen fruit/ice ring I had made for them.
When I went back out a couple of hours later, they had eaten all the blue berries.
I guess next time it's hot, they can eat the watermelon that is in ring.

Anthrax: Anthrax is a lethal disease affecting mostly animals caused byBacillus anthracis. Anthrax is capable of being contracted in the skin, lungs and gastrointestinal tract. Animals are capable of spreading this disease to humans, but humans are incapable of spreading this disease to each other. Sources of anthrax can be from body wastes and carcasses of infection animals and can easily be accidently handled or ingested by humans, further spreading the disease (Liu et al. 2013).I recall way back, in Texas they bulldozed thousands of cattle into pits....................for Anthax.

Bio-Terror-ism.....................kill the food the people live on = kill the people.

In the UK was Mad Cow, a form of Bovine Spongiform Enceohalopathy (sp?) a form of Bovine spongiform disease which turns the brain to "sponge", was cited as being caused by feeding COWS beef-by-products....in turn their immunal systems went beserk & attacked the proteins they were fed, which were bains (among other beef by products) and in turn, the immunal system alos attack the healthy brain tissue of the cow........................................................
Imagine that !


Still, today, THEY say they are not positive the disease originated from the cattle being fed their own species, to which I say POOP !!! Among other things I'd love to say!~~~~

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome! I wanted to start small and only got 4 (mostly because I knew next spring I'd want more chicks)
I got a Barred Plymouth, an Australorp, an EE and a Blue Cochin. All of them are gorgeous 9 week old g irlies and are total lap chickens.
I haven't named any of them yet but I'm up for suggestions!

Explain poop hammock ?
As in cloth ?
I would not recommend cloth...I use edged Poop Trays, with sand in them, and scoop poop with a cat litter spoon. But cloth would be so soiled so fast........



Then I also agree, predators could reach in, and the birds should have solid walls to protect them from wind & sideways rain we have here.

It seems that many people are having great success with poop hammocks. Seems easier to carry to the compost if it's just a sling.

As noted, I am putting up walls on the exterior parts of the roosting area. The bottom 2 feet are 1/2" hardware cloth to prevent grabbers on the ground, and the chickens will be protected by walls in the lofted area.

Try to avoid buying/transporting/eggs or birds especially from unknown sources or from areas with heavy incidents of AI.
Buy from someone you know, and keep the newbies in quarranteen for a few weeks to observe.

Unfortunately, I don't know anybody with chickens to buy!
