So Carolyn....how are the sweet meats growing this year ?

I've been meaning to mention those.... Got some really big ones this year! Thanks again for the seed. The vines are enormous, like you said. I'd love to find a good dry squash for pies that has a smaller vine, any ideas? I'm also doing Sweet Dumpling for the first time. I'm not sure what to think of those yet. They're sharing space with the Sweet Meat and seem to be overpowered a bit. Using the manure and wood chips have been wonderful. DH was really skeptical, but his beans are much nicer this year too.

The tomatoes are in a different area but got pretty much the same treatment and they're not up to par this year. They've always loved that spot, but I think the moles are digging trenches all over in their root zone. Nothing grows well when that happens! We'll have enough, they just won't be a impressive as usual.

I have two beautiful tiny Barnevelder chicks that are thriving with their mamma hen. After breaking her broody about 7 times in 2 years she finally got to hatch some chicks. Momma is a blue wheaten ameraucana and she's a great mother. Nobody messes with her chicks -- except me. :)

This particular line of Barnevelders has proven to be pretty good for autosexing, but there's always those few that can't quite decide. So we know we have one pullet for sure, her name is Gigi. Then there's Hope, her markings are not strikingly a boy's, but not totally a girl either. So... Hope she's a pullet.

We're have a grand time watching the interaction of momma and babies. It's a first for us, too.

Pullets typically feather more quickly than the cockerels, but the cockerels grow tails faster than the pullets (Not going to be 100% accurate). Just observation.

Speaking of cockerels, does anyone need/want any? I have blk cp marans, speckled Sussex x partridge rock, speckled Sussex x buff orpington (especially beautiful), and will also have salmon faverole x partridge rock. Any one intetested, I'll post pics for you.

Brand new chicken mama here! I have seven breeds I'd like to combine to start my flock, but all of the bigger hatcheries have minimum orders that are far too many chicks for this lady! Any suggestions??? I'm in puyallup
