I am in Washington State. I like chickens but I am in to the ducks for their eggs. I am allergic to chicken eggs and duck eggs do not bother me. I am not able to buy duck eggs in my area so I had no choice but to get 6 ducks to get my eggs.
Is this site only for chickens. ??

Welcome to the Washington thread! We talk about anything and everything here. I love ducks but don't own any for now...maybe someday. I raised ducks when I was a child. From about 10 years old to 14 years old. I enjoyed my ducks very much and we lived on the river so it was a natural. I used to get abandoned baby ducks every year, raise them and release them.

Elsewhere in BYC you can find breed and species specific threads, like the Barred Plymouth Rock thread, or the Muscovie Duck thread, for example.

Goodness no! Welcome to BYC!!!! This site is for all essentially all backyard farmers regardless of what livestock they raise! My daughter is allergic to chicken eggs too, unless they have been cooked for a certain length of time or to a certain temp. so she can have them in baked goods but she couldn't eat a fried egg.

Adding a new chicken should definitely be done over a period of weeks. Not to mention without quarantine period you could be introducing illnesses to your flock from the new bird, or to the new bird from your existing flock. Have meds on hand in case any of your chickies start showing signs of sickness.

I think the need to quarantine gets overlooked.
Integrating the new chickens into the flock and pecking order is important, too, but make sure your original chickens stay healthy!!!!

I agree. I'm trying to warn my father in law about integration and quarantine and he wants to take a bantam phoenix that he's getting and he plans on just tossing her in with his flock of 10 chickens once he gets her mite problem solved.

I agree too, but it's not always possible. I guess that's the chance that those of us take who don't quarantine. I don't have anywhere to do that. If I did have the space, I certainly would. All I did with this new chicken was look through her poos after she had made a few and checked her for mites. Of course I observed her general behavior too and she was acting fine. Of course the cocci in the soil she came from can be (and most likely is) totally different from what is here, and, I don't know about her Merek's exposure though mine have been vaccinated.

Again, I've got nothing to go on except prayer.

Well, you can only do so much, if you don't have a spot to keep her. But at least you checked her over.
I do think most of the time it is fine.
