I just put clump of grass and dirt in the brooder. They are eating it. Maybe I should've waited a while to put it in there. Do any of you guys put dirt and grass in with your chicks?

Yes , it simulateseems what they would do with a broody hen. Make sure you change it daily.

@Leigti I would put a small one relative to how many chicks you have. It's to get them used to the organisms in your local soil slowly so they can build up a resistance to it.

I always use my phone. It works pretty good. Except when Siri doesn't understand what I say I probably put two big of a chunk in there. I only have three little chicks. After work today I will change it out.
It is so much fun watching the little babies, my others were a little older when I got them. It's funny watching them run around and try to fly. And My Little Rd., Island red flies straight up in the air about 6 inches. Very adorable.

my 5 bards and 6 of my light brahmas were raised from chicks a few days old it was all kinds of fun watching them, we were still in Shelton I had turned my friend small basement into a chicken yard covering wire dog crates first then as they got a bit bigger I had exercise pens with chicken wire I tore up parts of the poor mans yard to give them clumps of grass then.

Yes, hope all is well...meanwhile, I should've got my chicks from you!!! I have a deposit on an order from a breeder in California for 6 pullets and one cockerel. Sigh, and I probably won't get them till April either.

LF Speckled Sussex and/or Light Sussex are at the top of my list! I tried to get SS last year and oh what a run-around that turned out to be! In the end no SS which really bummed me out. So now they are on my hit list for the future. I want to get nice quality birds rather than hatchery. I know a perfect source for SS... Tony Albritton. He judges at some of the poultry shows, and shows too, so although he lives in Idaho he travels to our area at least twice a year. And at the last show I found a local breeder that's gotten several of his birds to start her own breeding (and showing) program.

If you're really interested, I'd highly recommend picking some up from Tony at a show. You all know about the WFF show in Monroe on March 19, right?

Carolyn call him & make sure he brings you eggs and/or chicks or birds ! It would be sad if he arrived and did not bring any...or did not come to this show...
