The black skin (and meat and bone) color in silkies is controlled by a totally different gene than either shank color or feather color. It is effected by the barring gene, though.
Yeah I was thinking of the feathers, and you were talking specifically about skin, my mistake. Interesting that there is yet another way to get sex links!

We just moved to Battle Ground WA, and having chickens and quails for the first time. Have 30 adult quails and have two 1 months chick (some type of Frizzle) and 3 other 3 weeks old chicks.
The weather been so rainy, but when it's sunny outside, we would let the two chicks out in our back yard to run around. Surprisingly, they just hang around in one area.

We also let the quails out in the back yard as well, they just sit in one place close to the ground. Some quails did try to explore a little, but for the more parts, just sit and try to hide in the grass.

I'm looking for incubator space for about 5 quails eggs if anyone have space in their incubator :) -- please

Hello!
I'm quite north of you so incubator space is a no. What kind of quail do you have? Did your quail just sit in your yard? That seems really tame for quail. I lost 3 last year to escaping into the yard.

We have 16 Texas A&M / 14 Japanese Quail - Coturnix ---
Our fence line is 6 feet, they seem to only fly about 4 to 5 feet max. I haven't lost any quail yet, but they do not seem happy outside. They are more lively inside their cage.
Guess since they were raised in a cage all this time, they do not know what to do with all the new found space or they may just be cold.

We purchased these adult quails 3 weeks ago, it's a new experience having livestock/pets. They sure produce lots of droppings.

I'm still trying to figure out how to stop them from pulling each other feathers out.
