Yikes! I thought having to deal with raccoons was bad but Bears are a whole new level! And I just chased a bear out of my run, not more than 10 feet from the house...
geez good grief soak cheese cloth in ammonia wrap peanut butterAnd I just chased a bear out of my run, not more than 10 feet from the house...

That is scary. Do you have any big dogs? Might be time to get a gun and electric fence. And some of that bear spray. And a bear bell.
good grief so what in heavens name do they expect you the residents to to do?I've got a 12 gage shotgun and a 70 pound pitbull mix. The dogs didn't phase him one bit. And I can't legaly shot it since I had chicken feed outside in the run. Fish and Game around here would say he was 'baited' in. Ridiculous. No bear should be that close to an occupied house in the middle of the day. To many bears around here, and Fish and Game won't do anything.
And the ammonia in cloth does not work on these guys. They've learned to ingore it.

Not around here. You will get fined for 'unintentional' feeding of the bear. They have the opinion that the bear was just being a bear, and you, as the human, did something to draw the bear in. They assume that the bear would not come up to the house unless there was a 'food' reason. You can't leave food out for your outside cat or dog either. That's considered baiting. You're not allowed to have wild bird feeders or keep your trash can outside. The problem is, not everybody has a garage or shed to store their trash can, they have no choice but to have it out. And the trash company refuses to provide 'bear-proof' cans, because that would mean the drivers doing the pick ups would actually have to do more than sit in the truck and push a button. If you see a bear trying to attack your pet, you can't shot it, just because you chicken feed outside of the run?
If you see a bear attacking your child, you can't shot it as well, just because you have chicken feed outside of the run?

How about a bear destroying your property, can you shot it?

Bears have pulled down fencing to get to trash. They will pull apart a shed to get to trash. The woods are full of berries this time of year, but they just sit, ignored by the bears. They are trash eaters around here. And nothing is being done.
