Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I've never been to a chicken show. What is the "table top" for? Is it just to see if their chickens will stay put? :) all of mine would definitely fly away.
actually I do believe that is much like showing the toy dogs we place them up so the judge may stand to
see them unlike with the dogs the judges did not seem to want to put hands on the chickens?
checking placement of wing or features ?

Yeah, it looks like the judge and the person that probably owns the chicken are trying really hard not to touch it.

That is how it looked although I did see the owner using some bait to get the bird to stretch
it's neck or maybe preen? maybe a few who showed can chime in here

@Chickielady , have you ever had to deal with depluming mites?

I have a hen that's lost most of the feathers on her neck. At first I thought she was molting but it didn't progress in that fashion. Then I noticed a messy vent and feather loss there too. She got a bath and I've treated her, and the others, with Sevin and now Frontline (actually another brand but same active ingredients). I'm wondering how long it will take for her feathers to re-grow. She's a little over 1 year old and hasn't had a full molt yet.

I've also cleaned out the coop and nest boxes, sprayed with neem oil, and dusted with sevin. I'll spray with Neem again tomorrow, and again next Sat.
YES!!!
And I think I'll slit my own throat if it ever happens again here !
We had so many birds...6 coops of birds, and so many started birds too.
We had a broody in a breeding box (3x5x3 foot high...lid opens to get inside...and she was doing her broody thing.and on the blessed day I went out to see if any babies were about, and the ENTIRE BOX was COVERED with running mites to the point it was nearly impossible to see the wood !
The ceiling of the lid, the lip, the walls, the stupifeid broody hen, all covered in BILLIONS of mites actually running up my arms.....I freaked ! Hudson sprayer with Sevin, and Eprinexed the hen, and under her 6 chicks hatched & 1 just hatched still wet, I eprinexed them all!
Then we sprayed and sprayed, ceilings, walls, doors, nest boxes and roosts, to the point of saturation, dripping wet to get it in every nook & cranny...and sevin dusted every bird, hold them on the floor & rub it into their skin on their bellies....
EVERY 3 or 4 days....................it was insane !!!
Birds were ripping feathers out....
I remember walking into a coop (pick any coop) and the bugs drop off the ceiling into my hair !
They have parts that sense carbon dioxide, warmth & vibration...so they know when a warm body is coming............
they are AWFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eprinex your birds.....then spray & make sure you get the spray down into the coop floor material....if you have thick floor litter, remove it for the next few weeks !
OR
Remove the thick floor litter and spread a thin layer of grass hay.
I removed & replaced nest hay so many times, then realized it did no good, better to just saturate the hay that is there, with Sevin.
be aware that Sevin only works when wet...so it says on the label.
So after it dries, more mites can just drop off the birds and re-infest.
I use Permectrin II, also, and mix it up & spray the birds directly with it.

Permectrin II:::::::::::::::::

We were spraying & dusting every day for a few weeks, and then all was well..............
And then about a month later we were re-infested but we got on it right away and were back to dusting & spraying daily for another 2 weeks, and then every 3 days after that, and every 3 days after that, and every 3 days after that (for about another 2 weeks) and then WATCHED......and apparently then we had finally killed them all.

Incidently, I remember before all this started, about a week before I discovered the broody covered in mites.... it was a hot HOT day, we had coop doors open, and despite over head netting, a big song bird was trapped in a coop, and I discovered it as I was closing coops up and it was then dark outside so no way could I chase the bird out, it kept flying crazy all over the inside of the coop making my chickens crazy scared..(probably flitting mites all over the entire coop !)............so I left it be, closed the door, and in the morning I opened the door in the morning sun, and out it flew.

Not long after that, the infestation began.
I no longer leave the big (human) doors open on anyday !
We have screen, AND hardware wire over every window to keep out birds, rats, mice, bats and any other critter that can spread bugs and disease....
I think I'd rather have a few root canals instead of depluming mites !

maybe even have another pregnancy !!!

Table Top is the Serema show, and it is separate from the regular caged show birds.
Although I am no expert in the Table Top event, or Seremas, from what I have seen, is the birds are judged by their demeanor, calmness, and humans ability to handle them, as well as their coloration and physical form.
So that is why they are placed on a table & allowed to stand (sit, stay, rooll over, LOL) without a human having to restrain the bird.
They really are awesome birds !

Oh, and I also double-boiler melt (slowly) a few cups of lard (in a tub at the grocery store) and a cup of neem oil, and a few T of of Melafix (Walmart or other Fish/Aquarium supply store) and mix, pour in another rubbermaid tub, allow to cool til it is a semi solid ointment, and then rub bird's legs and roosts down...kills scaley leg mites too!

Ok so like a puppy we socialize for shows and my barred that squat for me to pickup
and pet.. at a dog show the judges go over them we all put the minds eye for the
standard and feel for correctness checking correct eyes, teeth ear set and body
then watch movement
