Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Get yourself a few does and a buck. They are easier to raise than chickens.

I think I've pretty much maxed out my critter numbers right now. And I couldn't kill them, I would have them named and I don't eat what I name :) :) every once in a while they'll have some at the store for about four dollars a pound so I stock up then.

She is right there rabbits are easy it is the killing can be downright scary
gotta be fast or they screammmmmmmmmm

Not at all. I found it quite peaceful. Ours are handled everyday from birth, so they don't get stressed out in the slightest. We use an air cartridge pellet gun in the back of the head. No screaming at all.

My first time killing a rabbit was terrible because I tried hitting it in the back of the head and it did not work well. I learned to break their necks efficiently and that worked for me but we raised New Zealand Whites to eat and other breeds to supply pet stores so I only handled the pets and tried not to get attached to the meat rabbits.

With any meat I raise I prefer breeds that look plain (not cute enough to name) and then I think of them as meat rather than a companion in order to separate it in my mind. Once they are cleaned and in the freezer, it is easy enough to cook and eat them. I sort of have to raise them in groups and butcher them in groups while reminding myself that I am giving them a good life in return for them sustaining my life. As long as the kill is fast and humane so they don't suffer my goal is for them to die before they know they are being killed. Then their soul is free of pain and trauma and I say a prayer of thanks.

I used to raise all my own meat but my daughter is too emotionally sensitive to eat anything she cares for so we don't butcher anymore in order to spare her from the bad feelings. We need protein in our diet but we don't eat meat every day because of the cost. I have always gone heavier on the grains and light on the meat so we eat like hunters and gatherers even if we shop for our groceries.
