Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I think I've pretty much maxed out my critter numbers right now. And I couldn't kill them, I would have them named and I don't eat what I name :) :) every once in a while they'll have some at the store for about four dollars a pound so I stock up then.
When you raise any animals, you get to keep the females & stud male, and yes you can name them, or in the case of a large farm, they get numbers.
It is the offspring that you do not get to name.
It has always worked for me & my family.
We are allowed to love on & spoil just a few.the others GO.

yeah I finally saw her...mean looking bird....LOL

I have a few cocks that would put her in her place.

Same here. I only name the ones that I'm sure to be keeping long term. The meat rabbits all look the same anyways, so even if they were named, I couldn't tell which was which.

I have a question for everybody. Has anybody tried Union point poultry feed? Would your chickens eat it? I have been trying to get my chickens to eat it for A while now and they just don't like it. I have tried it dry, wet, and very mean textures of fermented. They eat it if they're absolutely starving but otherwise they just don't touch it. Has anybody else had this problem?
On paper it looks like good feed, and the customer service is great. But if they won't eat it I guess all that doesn't really matter.
My birds LOVE LOVE LOVE the pelleted feed at Bi Mart, and it is higher protein & better ingredients than layena, and it is about $12 a 50# bag.

generally we try not to bash BYC sponsors here..but I can't help it !

This feed is excellent & waste free also...the pellets are small, so birds like them VS. Layena pellets that are huge.....I have heard their rabbit feed is excellent too...I'll check next trip...

I wish we had a place locally where you could raise say chickens or rabbits goats etc. and then take them in and have those people process them. There are people that come out for cattle and sheep and I am assuming goats. But not for smaller things like chickens or rabbits. I could raise them to eat if someone else could do the dirty work. What can I say, I know it is a copout but oh well.
One of the perks of raising your own food, besides purity and health, is it is cheap, process it yourself.
I still do deer, goats & a neighbors who is trying to get me to help him butcher his annual elk.....(

)........and I am getting old.

Rabbits are one of the fastest & ""cleanest"" animals to butcher, learn to pull the skin off in a whole "tube"..we attached ours to a pole & could pull the skin downward.

DH & I are at the point where we can process 12 cornish cross in about 20 minutes tops............and a deer about 45 minutes per quarter......same for goats.
But seriously, but the time you pay for someone to process your animal...you may have well just bought meat somewhere.

Meat markets will have a list of mobiles
the one here does... that or go to home town
grocer finds the old man in the meat dept.
The butcher at your neighborhood grocery may be able to come to your home to butcher...but he cannot use the facilities at the grocery store (ie: bone saws, knives, handheld meat saws, etc) as these facilities are inspected by the FDA and the health department....they cannot have "mystery meat" in their facility by law.
