I stopped at a farm for directions and saw a huge three-legged pig walking around the yard. I said to the farmer, "That's quite a pig." He responded, "You don't khow the half of it — we had a fire and that pig broke down the door an dragged my kids, my wife, and me out of the house." "That's amazing," I said, "How did he lose the leg?" The farmer responded, "If you had a pig like that, would you eat him all at once?"

oh just sick but darn sides hurt

My birds LOVE LOVE LOVE the pelleted feed at Bi Mart, and it is higher protein & better ingredients than layena, and it is about $12 a 50# bag.

generally we try not to bash BYC sponsors here..but I can't help it !

This feed is excellent & waste free also...the pellets are small, so birds like them VS. Layena pellets that are huge.....I have heard their rabbit feed is excellent too...I'll check next trip...

Is Union point a sponsor here? The bimart here in town just started getting in payback feed.

It's Payback that the Bimart in Aberdeen carries. We always pick up some when we head down for clam digs. Best prices on feed. Paybacks 5 way scratch is my girls favorite.

Just like my dogs and cats, I like to give my chickens a variety of feed over time. Different brands, different ingredients etc. It just makes sense to me to mix it up a little so to speak.
Has anybody on here ever tried The brand "natural farm feed" up in Spokane?

What are the ingredients in the pay back scratch? I have been pleasantly surprised about the chicken supplies at by mart and cascade. The stores are affiliated somehow. But they each have some different things that the other one doesn't.
I got the cutest little :) galvanized bucket at by mart the other day. Says it holds up to 35 pounds of feed. I'm actually going to use it for Oystershell. And they also had a tiny little bucket that I use to go get the eggs from the nesting box with. Except for those times I'm stupid and put them in my pocket .....
I usually feed grower feed. But I try to find ones with animal protein, no soy, no corn, and organic. Dang near impossible unless you're really rich. But there are a few out there. But like I said a variety overtime is important so I don't think one bag of something with corn in it is going to kill anybody. I'm actually more anti-soy than anything else. Organic is always nice not completely sure what I think about the non-GMO stuff. There is so much hype out there it's hard to tell.

I don't have any right now to snap a picture of the tag. I tend to get whatever is cheapest with the highest protein that they will eat. That's Flockraiser at Coastal at the moment since we get a discount there. Payback pellets are smaller than other brands and make the chickens happier. The crumbles they are getting right now make them happiest.

I'm not sure if Payback has an organic line.

Are usually try to ferment the feed and the chickens have always absolutely loved it. Have you ever seen a chicken stampede? I'm sure everybody here has and it is adorable. But with the union. Feed my chickens literally don't even come over to see what I'm doing when I dish it out. They eat it only slightly better if I just toss it out there regularly and not fermented. Unfortunately I bought a bunch of the stuff so now I have to mix it in with some others stuff so I can get rid of it.
Not every single bag I buy is organic or soy free etc. but I do try. A lady at work who buys my eggs has to be very careful what she eats and other peoples eggs have made her not feel well. But because my chickens eat 99% organic quality feed most of the time she's had no problems with the eggs I have.
The favorite food I've gotten them is scratch and peck, I feed it fermented or at least wet. It's really not made to feed dry. They absolutely go crazy over it but it is expensive. Azure Standard does ship to my town so that has made it possible for me to buy it more often.

I give my birds what my great grandmother gave hers: Scratch..and it is cracked corn, wheat, millet, and what I think are oats...I don't have a tag right here with me, but I'll bring one in next trip.
The scratch is really clean...no added preservatives or soybean oils, just clean pure stuff.
I love to malt it, and after about 4 days I give it to the birds and they go wild for it, more wild than if it were plain scratch.
To malt grains, just leave it to the rain in a bucket with some tiny holes for drainage otherwise the grain will rot.
Once malted, the grains release enzymes which turn the stored starches to sugars, enabling the plant to sprout.
When the seeds get about a 2" root & 4 " green tops, I let the birds have it in aluminum pie plates in each pen...they go nuts !
Funny too...my cats love the tender sprouted grains too !
Since they are indoor cats, these malted grains are very good for them.

Oh and I routinely put eggs in my pockets, sometimes up to 12 in each shorts pocket & 4-5 in each pocket of my sweatshirt...buried my cell phone...and 2 X now I have had the gate slap my side as I walked out, smashing 4-5 eggs all over said cell phone..............LOL

Hey Chickielady! Sorry I didn't see this until later, accidentally left BYC open(again). I was dealing with some water issues... We have a very unusual water system in our new home and it was giving us grief today. All fixed though!

We have a weird Einstein water system here.with 5-350 G and 3-1000 G water tanks, 4 working wells, 2 ultra violet sterilizers and a Dosatron chlorine delivery system....and hoses all over the place !
