Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Well, I decided it was time to move the chicks outside. I've been sick all week, haven't gotten anything done. But decided that the chickens don't care if I coughed all over them so I might as well try to get one project done. They are around six weeks old so I think they'll do fine. I will put them in the coop in their little cat carrier at night.

Hello Washington!
Just stopping by to introduce myself. I have a flock of 13 chickens in my backyard and 4 in a brooder on my kitchen table.
I started with 4 chickens a little over one year ago because my wife was having difficulty with standard eggs, and I wanted more control over what we eat.
I built my own coop from recycled barn wood. As far as I am concerned they are pets with the added bonus of fresh eggs.

My Flock

2 Americana
2 gold sex link
2 silver laced Wyandotte

1 coco moran

Welcome to the group! Hop right on in the conversations

Welcome. Looks like you have a good variety of chickens.

Looking good. I need to get a covered spot for my young ones.

well then you have one ready often if you use once just bringing it
out will make her leave it alone

She's smart and tries to please me. I let her know I was upset with her licking that spot. She'd be good for a bit then forget and lick again and I'd say something again.

I drew her attention to the spot this afternoon. She sniffed to check it out then ignored it so she got praised. Hopefully we don't have this issue again.

One of the vet techs is weirded out by the pupae. She touched one thinking they don't move but they do wiggle a bit and that freaked her out. I just grab them up so it does not bother me. Handling the mealworms and beetles is not an issue for me either. It is strangely satisfying watching the beetles emerge from the pupae as the life cycle continues. I also love seeing the tiny baby worms, even knowing they will grow up to be feeders.

It is not as gross as picking maggots out of a sheep's flesh wound! When I lived in Colorado we used to get the "no bid" sheep from the auction in order to doctor up whatever caused them to be pulled from the group and they came in from Wyoming pretty neglected. The overgrown wool can hide things until you get up close to check them over.
Yup. I worked on a sheep ranch in Oregon...oh yes the wool can hide plenty, especially leg wounds and around the privates.

I recall wriggling pupae in steer flesh we had to squish them out by pressing down on them with a 1/2" box wrench...and POP out shoots a worm.........YUCKERS!

NAWWWW once you wade in pigs blood with maggots you can do anything
we never have that much pig blood laying around to get maggots !

but the LGDs have buried leg bones from deer & sheep and dig them up and walk around with a bone hanging out their mouths (parading) and maggots falling out of the bone marrow....................................................
