Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

We don't have enough salal growing for more than just an occasional snack when I go by.

The serviceberries withered on the trees instead of ripening this year.

Blackberries are almost ready here.

I did buy some boysenberries and blueberries Sunday and deseeded and jammed the boysenberries last night. Tonight will be the blueberries.

Hubby has been on a huge jam kick this year and wants variety

We're going blueberry picking tomorrow too. I've never tried actually making anything with the salal.

I'm so sorry for your loss CarolynF. My heart goes out to you and your family.

Had a huge scare yesterday - we came home unexpectedly late from the fair and four 2 month old chicks and a hen were missing. We thought for sure they got eaten, but as soon as the sun came up we found them roosting in the fruit trees. I think it's time to clip some wings!

I'm already starting to plot out next spring's chick order. Not sure we really need more, but the fair was fun and made me kind of want some better quality bantams.

So I was working next to the big chicken run yesterday and my nasty Welsummer Roo was acting up crowing like crazy he is mean and then I here another rooster crowing kind of muffled and then I here it again it's coming from inside the coop hmm I only have one rooster. I go inside the coop and there on the perch is one of my black astralorps how can this be I have had this group for over two years out of 18 of them I have got 17 eggs a day at best could it be a rooster. There are no long neck hackles and no sadle hackles. I will put up a picture of her/ him later today. Has anyone ever herd of a hen crowing? This bird does not get touched by the rooster in any way and none of the hens ever bother it either.

Older, dominant hens can start crowing.
