Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Interesting! We had one mutt chicken with progressive paralysis, so we suspect there could be Mareks in our area...I've heard it is widespread in the PNW. It was traumatic for the kids, so want to get vaccinated chicks in the future. Can vaccinated birds pass Mareks to unvaccinated ones? Our five adult birds are unvaccinated...

what birds where you wanting from them

If they caught chicken mareks later they could be unknown carriers.

Do not put vaccinated chicks with unvaccinated ones. That can cause some issues.

Usually see issues between 9 weeks and 9 months.

Most adult birds will be fine. Mareks is everywhere. If you have air, there is some form of it in the air.

As I said, only certain breeds tend to be really susceptible.

The only reason a vaccine was developed was because it killed to many broilers, upping costs for the commercial growers

Penny1960, I wanted to get a Cream Legbar, an easter egger, a red-laced wyandotte, Cuckoo Marans, and a Plymouth Barred Rock to round out our flock. How many chicks are you looking to get? I could get even fewer if you were interested in getting more...(I was originally thinking 3, but it's hard to choose...). MPC has a neat function in the Day Old Baby Chicks section where you can select a week in February and see what's available then...

Oh and if you get day old chicks from me, which I have sold a some before a few times, I always ask if you want them vaccinated or not. If not I arrange a meet up time early on hatch day and you get first chicks out.

That litteraly just shook my world!! I haven't even thought about that. I'm still looking for chicks (silkies)have a shipment this upcoming week at the feed store. Waiting for the weekend to build more of the coop frame/YouTube every chicken video known with my daughter, but the brooder is good to go. I'm a bit on anxious at this point, and now worried about work and mixup of the chicks. Time to start messaging again and calling some hatchery (closest a 12 hr drive there and back)
Did you try Dunlap hatchery? They are in Idaho.

Well, my plan is to get specific breeds of checks from the store just died. The lady said that she is not going to place special orders this year. Oh well. Now I have to decide if I should order in checks or just pick from what they get in.

Hinotori, thanks for the info! I will have to mull over what to do...it is rather simple to get unvaccinated sexed chicks from the feedstore if I go the route of unvaccinated...
