sure they are fertile also

Hello all! This is my first post in the Washington thread. I'm way up north and way over west. About a mile from Canada and maybe 10 miles from the Pacific.

There sure seem to be a lot of Washingtonians on BYC. I've been watching the new members thread and welcoming people, and it's amazing how many there are from our state. Unless the ones from Washington just jump out at me, but I don't think so. It seems like there a few new ones every day.

There are a lot from Texas, which you might expect. And Georgia and North Carolina. I would have predicted that. But why so many chicken farmers in Washington? Or is it that those that there are in Washington are more likely to be online or join a community?
Welcome Plip !! :welcome
And as answer to your question about how many Washingtonians post, it has ALOT to do with the weather.
Stick around and you'll see when the sun comes out, there won't be any of us online at all !! :gig :gig :gig :gig
So while it rains, we can talk, learn, dream and still have fun with our comraderie.

7 Sulmtalers peeps, 2 Barnevelderx Excehquer Leghorn crosses, one Swedish Flower.

I have babies hatching every 7 days now.
Interesting thing with the favorite Swedish Flower hen, she is rumpless !
Grey, with white specks on the ends of her feathers like a S.Sussex, but no tail feathers at all.....she looks like a very pretty kiwi......................and she lays every single day !
All winter !
Anyone else out there with SFHs ? Anyone seen this ?

You are very welcome to the welcome !
Tell us more about you and yours, and welcome to the addiction !

My wife and I moved to five acres in the country about eight or nine years ago. I'd lived in town my entire life and was limited in what animals I could keep (although I had rabbits for a while as a kid). So I was really excited to have a little more room. Now we garden, and I put in an orchard with about a dozen trees. We have cats and a dog, and we pasture my mother-in-law's two horses off and on throughout the year. And of course, we got chickens.

I started with a chicken tractor for the first year we were here. But I realized quickly that wasn't going to cut it. So I built a coop, which holds about 15. And the tractor does "overflow" when someone needs to be kept separate for some reason (usually because they're out of the brooder but too young to joint the flock).

Our daughter was born soon after we moved here, so she's had chickens all her life. She loves them and it's just a great thing that we do together (really all three of us). Our daughter is eight now. She helps with the chores, collects eggs, helps me shovel out the coop when it's time. And she sells eggs to a few of our friends who have a standing order.

She loves animals, and she wants more. So last year we added quail, which is kind of our obsession right now. I'm also planning to get her rabbits in the spring (or sooner if I find the right ones; I watch Craigslist daily). She doesn't know she's getting the rabbits yet, although she's been trying to talk me into it for awhile. I'm looking forward to the day I tell her she needs to take a drive with me to pick something up. That'll be a happy day for both of us.

Thank you so much for asking! You're very kind!
