Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Hi y'all. I recently moved to Wenatchee and decided to start a small backyard flock. So off to the feed store I went but I ended up with a cockrel in my batch of chicks. He is a very handsome and friendly (so far) 8 week old Blue Sapphire. Unfortunately I live in town and my neighbors won't appreciate the crowing. Any one interested in a roo?

Will the cockerel mate with the older hens, or just his chickmates?
The cockerel will become the leader of all the flock, but he is young, so you have some growing pains to get through. When he is about a year old, he'll be invaluable to you. Well, that is my experience with the boys. They are good roosters, but a bit rambunctious and clumsy as cockerels, which is what they are considered until they are a year old.

It's always hard to rehome a rooster because everyone gets plenty of them it seems. But right now, most of us have closed coops, meaning we are not accepting any birds into our flocks, because of the bird flu. You might have luck finding a home when that threat is over. We are hoping that will be the end of June, but no one knows really.

Speaking of bird flu, I read in the WA Agri newsletter today that they are concerned with it spreading to the bald eagles too. That's a scary thought. The eagles do occasionally come to where my chickens are just to see if I have removed the netting and they can grab a quick chicken dinner. Praying our two eagles stay safe and free from the bird flu. So far, I have not heard of any bird flu instances in Lewis County, so hoping it has passed us by.

I figured it was a super long shot. So far he's being really good with the girls and I'd love to keep him. I'm going to try and bribe my neighbors with fresh eggs and baked goods.

Will the chicks from the mixes be just a barnyard mix, not resembling a Sapphire Gem?
The chicks will be a mix of whatever your rooster is and whatever the hen is. I get pure buff orpingtons from mine because my rooster is one and so are a few of the hens. But then I also get some interesting mixes that are obviously BO over RIR or Australorp. i did get some lavender orpingtons, but I had a LO rooster at the time. He has been rehomed, so I won't get them anymore. It will be whatever a BO over LO looks like. Should be interesting. However they turn out, they will be big fluffy chickens. I love all orpingtons.

I also now have 4 leghorns. Interesting and skittish little birds.
