Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Got a puppy remote in the mail today. Haven't had to zap him yet for nipping. The vibrate has worked just fine for corrections. He will learn to leave Athena's tail alone, not to nip legs, and leave the chickens unless told to help.

People may complain about shock collars, but used correctly they can save lives. Like teaching not to chase deer and elk. I had to use collars on Athena and Zeus for that purpose when they were young as well. Usually they just got vibrated

Omg Athena and the dang elk herd. Deer and elk kill dogs. She decided to go chase the herd of a dozen off the front of the property when she was young.

Hermes has an issue with wanting to herd the chickens back in their pens. He leaves them once they are in the gate. I however had let the birds out to graze. The large fowl are terrified of him and the silkies now run in their pen when they see him at all.

Molly got hurt last week because he startled her and she flew into the fence trying to turn to protect her chicks. Luckily nothing broken. Hermes got hosed good for that because I'd been filling water.

I buzzed him good tonight when he tried to push Ashes. He backed off fast. Haven't had to shock him so far.

Ruby has an electric collar on and an invisible fence. That saved her life around here. She needs a large space in which to run and that was the best way to accommodate her. We are on 5 acres, but we do have neighbors, all 5 acre lots here. Ruby would run into their yards and bark at them and intimidate them in the beginning. Oh my, she was a difficult dog when we first rescued her and we nearly sent her back to the pound, but we had a dog whisperer come out and help us. She is such a good dog now, but still wears the collar. She doesn't get zapped. She hears the tone and that tells her she is too close to the fence. Works like a charm.

May have to only use it he may not have a stubborn streak.
Good morning first cup of coffee.

Seems only stubborn about chickens being in their pens. He really wants to herd them. He's got 'the eye' down really well. The buzzer works extremely well on him. I can adjust how strong it buzzes as well.

Invisible fences work well if the dog isn't too stubborn or just plain dumb. Friend had a really dumb lab that was almost impossible to train. It would yelp and cry, but would just carry on past the invisible fence boundary until it was past the shock zone on the other side.

Of course the lab would also ignore the snarls and growls from my schipperke to leave her alone. I had to pull the runt of a schipperke off so many times because she was trying to rip out it's throat.

Great egg day we actually got all 7 chickens to lay eggs today (first time that has happened) but one of them was broken in a battle of the nesting box. We have 6 nesting boxes but they only want to lay eggs in two of the boxes I head them out there yelling at each other to get out of the way. Went out there and sure enough in the scuffle they broke one of the eggs.

Mine do that. Lay in one box then one hen will act like she is broody and sit on all of them. Next day she is on the next batch. We just take them away now. Lol. Been this way all summer. Lots of Broodies and no chicks to show for it. We have thrown out so many eggs. We are over it even if they aren’t. Lol

It's nice when you get an over 66% lay day, and even better at 100%. Yup, silly girls and the favorite nesting box. I have a repurposed box from Costco that has pine shavings, and a repurposed cat litter tray with straw. Went to check one morning, and 3 girls were piled in the Costco box, like sardines. Had a 100% day a couple weeks ago, but mostly we have 6-7 out of 9.
