Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

One time the same hen laid this egg. But it was early on and a one time thing. (Purple.)

Ughhhhhh put the girls to bed tonight and one of our rode island reds had a soft shell egg shell sticking out of.het vent Ughhhhhh she has been molting for a few weeks now and hasn't laid an egg that I know of for about 3 to 4 weeks is this just because of her molting? I have switched their feed to all flock and Oyster shells on the side and been feeding them scrambled eggs with shells on the side as well as grubs every other day they are on 19% protein. Should I give her calcium tabs tomorrow or tonight? She is 2 years old

I would first limit grubs and treats to every other week.
Every now then shell less egg is no big deal it is hard to come back molt so might be cause.

I have had 2 good egg laying summers with my 8 hens. This is my first flock, so I am interested to see how much the egg laying will slow down next summer.

My wife and I are thinking about renewing the flock and moving the older hens to a seperate run for their retirement.

I live in Gig Harbor, WA. Does anyone have recommendations for local farms to get Black Marans?

I currently have:
2 barred rocks
2 blue saphires
2 olive eggers
2 easter eggers

Unless space is your concern, there is no reason to separate out your retired ladies. They can all peacefully live together.

I'll probably get jumped on for this, but I give my chickens a few meal worms every day. They love them and I believe it adds a bit of protein to their diet. I never have soft shelled eggs and after doing this for 7 years, my hens are always healthy. They don't die until they are about 6 or older, and way past egg laying. They do still eat plenty of their good feed and grains, which is always available.
