Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I had to save a garter snake from the chickens yesterday, it had taken shelter in a bag of dried leaves so when I dumped the leaves in the run, whoops there's a snake! Tried pushing it out of a hole in the fence and it crawled right back wanting to get in the bag, so I had to carry it away before the chickens spotted it.
My hero!

I got around 1/3" of rain yesterday and might get 1/4" today. I won't need to water the garden for a while now.

The little 7 and a half week old chicks' feeder ran out of crumbles so they graduated to full size All Flock pellets today. They quickly ate a pile I tossed in their run so all is good.

I need to start thinking about releasing them into the general population soon but I need to set up a couple escape areas for them where they can hide from older birds if they get picked on. I'm thinking a small sheet of plywood supported 3 or 4 inches above ground level should work.

Look at all these scapes! I have 58 heads of garlic growing.

Nice scapes! Ended up getting 3/8" more rain today and the ground is soaked nicely. Plants look deep green.

I tried letting the 7 week old chicks out with the others and it didn't work. The other chickens pecked at them and scared them.

The old barred rocks weren't too aggressive but the 12 week old New Hampshires (at least one of them) were pecking hard at the head of one of the chicks. It looked like it was pecking at the red comb, but I didn't see any blood so it could've been worse.

I put the chicks back into the brooder to grow for 2 or 3 more weeks before I try again.

I finished putting up bird/deer netting over the inside of the 6x6 fence that secures the top half of the day run. I put it up to keep the little chicks from escaping, but I guess it wasn't necessary to do today. At least it will keep little wild birds out of the run. But a possum or coon will walk right through it if it wants in.
