Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Finished the Thanksgiving meal in time to watch some football. The grandkids helped me do the three week weigh-in of the chicks. They've all more than doubled in weight over the last seven days. They're getting so big I'm thinking about putting some pellets in the brooder to see if they'll start eating them.

And Happy Thanksgiving!
I think if your pellets are flock raiser or all flock, it should be fine. The chicks that are raised by our hens make the switch rather early. I put the chick feed out but they move on. When I'm raising them, I stay with chick feed until they integrate. For this reason I generally use flock raiser all the time. I've never had shell problems, so I don't see the need for the layer pellets. Never had productive issues, except for the leghorns and I think that is a cancer issue.

IDK...we all make our best guess. My hens live to be old, so I must be doing something right. Except for the leghorns.

I made broth over night with the turkey carcass and some veggies and herbs. I left a little of the meat on the bones and some of the skin which had been brined with salt and herbs. It turned out so good! Hope to get 7 pints canned today of it.

Turkey tetrazzini tonight and that will be pretty much the end of the turkey. For an 8 lb bird it has gone a long way.

I didn't know James was sick. Hope he is better soon.

I did get 7 pints. The slow cooker is the way to go with broth. Cooks overnight, and the amount of water I put in is the same amount that comes out. So, I got exactly 7 pints of broth. This batch is the best broth I've ever made. I think because I left some of the meat on the bones and some of the skin too. Ran it all through cheese cloth to get a nice golden clear broth.

I should make some broth from the turkey carcass, roast the bones brown then simmer with veggies. Does broth require a 90 minute processing time in the pressure cooker?

The turkey meat is almost gone now. I chopped some up, added it to browned onions and tossed in a little stuffing. Mixed in a couple eggs at the end and it was good.

I canned pints -- 20 minutes pressure canning. Brought the broth to a boil before canning, and canned in heated jars.

My beautiful broth.
