Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

I just saw a report saying that bird flu hit a backyard flock in Lewis county, in or near Toledo. Hope your birds are OK @ValerieJ , and your river isn't too high for comfort.

All the lumber is in place for the new chicken run. Just need to build and install the door and hang the hardware cloth.

That site doesn't say where in Lewis County they were found. Where did you hear it was in or near Toledo?

Our flock is fine. They are not near the river at all, so there is no interaction with water fowl at all.

But thanks for the heads up. We will only give them treats inside for a while and close them in earlier each day. Well, they are mostly in now anyway due to rain.

Oh, and we are not threatened by the river at all. It would have to rise 30' to get to us and there is a lot of lower land on the other side of it. Right now the berm across the river from us is completely under water. It hasn't even risen as high as our dock so far. Oops...correction. Dock is under water. DH is unhappy that he didn't bring it up. We have a wench to do that. I told him next year when I nag him about it he better not get mad at me.:lau See, it doesn't pay to stop nagging. :old

The drive to Longview today was another story. Could hardly see to drive on the freeway!

It doesn't say it was in Toledo in the release, but on the map image in the my post it shows a yellow circle with a blue ring around it. That's where the chickens with bird flu were found. The smaller red dot is where Toledo is centered and I added that with the tools provided.

And I'm glad your river is low there. I kind of figured that with all the lowland on the other side.

Oh, and I thought you mentioned that wood ducks fly around your place. If your chickens find some duck poop while out and about they'd probably peck at it. Or eat it. LOL
Well, we did have a couple wood ducks at the bird feeding site, but that is about 300' from the coop and even the free range area. We have never had a water bird of any kind anywhere near the chickens...except that once when the eagles attacked them, about 7 years ago. That's when they opened up the net fishing on the Columbia to the commercial boats. We had no salmon that year and the bald eagles were desperate for food.

Hey good morning no water near here !
I have always fed only on the coops.
Guess it was not such a bad thing.
My Dad said feed them in the coop. We had a pond at the back of our property.
Ducks did not hang around the chickens even then.

We feed in the coop as well, but will spread scratch grains and meal worms in the free range area to give them something to scratch and peck for. We will put those inside too for the winter, and then we'll see what the bird flu is doing in spring. First time we have had it in Lewis County that I know of.

I am just a creature of habit I guess.
To my mind we have never had anything like this before either.
My Dad was at Pearl Harbor doing clean up as a young man.
This made him hated killing for other than food.
I am product of what he taught me.

I think your dad sounds like a wonderful man.
