Woo! A new thread is a way better surprise than the dead squirrel my cat left for me to step on this morning. Way better .

I can trump you on that one: something dropped a dead opossum in the very precise middle of the orchard, right on the path from my gate to the gate into the field on the south-west corner. I need to go bury it, but after my sunset run to the top of the hill to check on a sickly calf last night, and the emergency roof repair this morning, I am not enthused.

It's also started raining again, which leaves me even more enthuriasm deprived.

I think I finally figured out how to put a lateral stabilizer in the sheep roof, best go get that done, eh?

Now is the time to contact the Pumpkin Farms around you.
I now grow mine but before in years past I'd call and see if I could stop by after the 31st to glean some.

I know Remlinger plows them back under the very next day.
Better to call now then few days before as they get quite busy.

Pumpkins very good food for your chickens.
The smaller size will store longer for you.

If you use .......... pumpkin seeds anti parasitic .......... in a search engine you can read about the health benefits for you and your chickens.

My chickens are huddled under their shelters as the wonderful winter rains have begun. Oh how I missed the rain. I don't have to water my strawberry pots anymore- or my new tree starts.

I sure hope it dissipates. That's pretty cheap for a yard, but I still don't think I could go there. There's a gross factor there that I don't know that I'd be able to get over.
I don't think I'd use it on edibles, but ornamentals, sure.

Heck, when I was in Korea the spinach was fertilized with "night soil".

Dang I Hate Needles!! I've always known there was a good reason for avoiding them, especially hypodermic needles! Tuesday morning DH and I got a shingles vaccination. The pharmacist said that once in a while, although rarely, did anyone have a reaction and then it was just a small rash around the injection site. Well, I'm here to tell you that we both still have a sore arm! There's a spot about the size of a coffee mug on my arm that's been very tender since the shot. And for two and a half days my collar bone itched like crazy, and I don't think it was a coincidence. Today it's my arm that itches instead of my collar bone. Then if I actually scratch it, IT HURTS!

Have any of you had this vaccination? Any similar reactions?

All that said, I'd rather have these minor annoyances than Shingles!!! But boy, this is one more mark in the 'Why Not' column for my argument against needles!!

Some vaccines are incubated in eggs. If you're allergic to eggs, you will react to that. My son had that problem.

OK--I bought play sand--that'll work right? I'm sure I paid too much for it at the store I was at, but I wanted to clean the coop *today* ...and my coop is so small it didn't even take one bag. The drawer is only about an inch deep. Is that deep enough? Do you ever need to totally dump the sand and start over fresh, or do you just scoop/stir and add to it when necessary?

Play sand should be just fine. An inch should be fine. I use a lot more since I do my run and keep extra so we get it in our pickup truck. I use a litter box scoop, obviously, and since sand sticks to anything wet such as poop it gets used up. When one of the girls has runny poo I scoop up more than usual. So I've never had to scoop it all out and start over. The floor of the coop is wood that I primed and painted with 2-3 coats of exterior paint. It's held up really well. To keep it that way I clean off any really wet spot of sand (by just pushing the sand aside) after scooping what I can. During the day it dries and I cover it back up with the dry sand before they go to roost. You'll develop your own "style" as you go along, don't sweat it. In the summer I like to leave the door open as much as possible to keep it fresh.

I got myself a load of pumpkins today. Found a guy on craigslist selling 500 lbs for $40.00. Bunch of smaller ones, but they will work for the birds.
