My mom used to tell the story that when I was a baby, she'd try to give me baby food green beans. One taste and I'd refuse to eat anything for 3 days.

I don't thing green beans are all THAT toxic. Many foods contain things that could be potentially a problem, like eggs and chicken.
Fresh green beans picked young and tender, put them in a pot of boiling water for a couple of minutes (still crunchy) then toss with a little sea salt and toasted hazelnut oil - my kids will gobble them up faster than fries, even the girl who otherwise won't touch greens.

The answer is yes & no, but mostly yes.
Beans contain Hemogluttein, a naturally occuring toxin. It's been awhile since I researched it, but I don't think it is fatal, but can make you seriously ill.
It is most prevalent in dried beans, I believe Kidney beans are the worse. 4-5 dried uncooked Kidney beans can put a human in the hospital. The easy solution is to cook the beans, if memory serves it is about 10 min of cooking in boiling water will destroy the toxin. Interestingly enough, partially cooked beans are worse the uncooked beans.
Fresh Green beans do contain Hemogluttein, but we all know that we've eaten them without getting sick.I believe the levels are low in Green beans, and often green beans are cooked.
If you google it you will find that many areas of europe won't eat green beans with out them being cooked into oblivion. Some of the stories are funny.

Russ- my alter ego (Imp) believes that green beans are the root of all things evil, taste like chicken poop, and should be banned from all 9 planets.

ETA- I give my chickens some frozen mixed vegs about every other day. I just thaw them in the microwave.
Mom is from Holland - she thinks re-heated spinach is toxic. I've noticed this in all Dutch natives I've met. If you cook spinach, you must eat it right away .... no spinach quiche spanakopita, or anything like that. Apparently spinach leftovers are deadly to the dutch!

but not their Amercan children!

Dang it's hard to take a good pic of two wiggly chicks! Anyway, here are my 2 spotted Sussex chicks, Tikka and Masala:

Masala is getting nice spots in while Tikka is just looking ratty. I hope they turn out nice. They are just under 3 weeks old. Both are little gluttons for mealworms and Tikka will even steal worms out from under Jerk's beak. When they see me in the room they start trying to fly out of the brooder!

Hopefully I'll get a better pic of them soon to put up.

Question: how big do spurs get on hens? Do they develop at all? Jerk now has two little nubs on the inside of her/his ankles. Maybe 1/8" long? I think Jerk is around 6 weeks old. I'll have to take a pic and post it tomorrow.

Most of my hens only have slight nubs, but one of my cuckoo marans from Chickielady has HUGE spurs, bigger than may of my roos. They hare at least an inch and a half long, and yes, I am sure she is a hen. A very broody one at that!

She might just be the 'ugly duckling!'

Quote: I like to give mine treats too and like you I saw that the lowest ones on the pecking order didn't get much. I helped that out a bit by putting out 3 or more dishes of whatever I am giving them. Spread them out as much as you can. They will get run off from one and go to another, then probably get run off from there but then can go to another. The meaner ones can't be at all of them at the same time.
