Very good point Greg. Also people keep in mind a couple other things about Cotton wood. If left on the ground green cotton wood will sprout and start growing again. And IF you ever get it dry enough to burn it will burn up like paper.

I have trees that came up all over from the branches that broke off during that ice storm. I picked up the branches in the worst spots but I'd like some more screening up front so I left some of the smaller branches right along the fence line. Those should last until DH decides to finally clear the fenceline to put up a new fence.

Their were cottonwoods all over the town where I grew up. Umatilla is on the Columbia so there is wind, but not as bad as in the middle of the Gorge. Nasty things dropped branches all the time in the windstorms we got. That cold winter with the bad winds in 1989 took out a lot of them and what still stood was mostly cut down that summer. We never used it in the wood stove. Dad always took branches that fell from the neighbors tree to the dump on free dump days.

Here we bought some cedar and fir off a landscaping truck this year. It wasn't bad $240 for what has turned out to be over 4 cords. Some of those trees were four feet across. We need a longer blade on the chainsaw to finish off the few wide ones. I doubt we'll need them this year anyway. We have enough left over from last year and the year before to probably go most of the winter.
