OMGosh, there are a whole bunch of new peeps these last few days!

To all the new peeps, glad you could join us here in the land of obsessed chickeners and major chicken enablers!

Well I had to do some room swapping with my chicks today, so now I only have 8 chicks in the house brooder, 16 chicks in the coop brooder, plus two chicks walking around with their moms. Tomorrow I go on lock down for 29 eggs in the bator! I can't wait to see more babies. I started out with 33 eggs two were in fertile and taken out on day 8 then today I candled one last time and two had died.

One more thing, I found a new (to me) breed that I want for next spring.... Blue Splash Marans! The only thing is I don't quite understand the color workings when it comes to breeds that do not breed ture (I am just a bit simple minded when it comes to things like that, lol) and I would like to breed those next year also. Does anyone here breed a blue splash breed of some kind that can explain how it works or just tell me what breeds I need to get these beautiful BSMs????

Blue is a dilution of black.
I have both BBS Jersey Giants and BBS Marans (Called Blue Copper Marans) LOVE THE BLUES !!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I lied. Cree Farms does BBS(blue, black,splash) Ameraucanas, and Wheaten and Blue Wheaten Marans. But I did get a really nice Splash Marans from them. So I don't know. I just Googled Cree Farms and their website came up.

Cree Farms BBS Ameraucanas is where the Crows came from....KA RAZY birds !

If you want BBS Ameraucana, I'd ask pips&peeps

Edited to add: You got 1 splash Am (OE) from me that was from a Cree BBS X Marans. Remember ?

I'll go there (I also had been avoiding the subject - call me a chicken) -- basically, there would be no effect on any animal who eats 'grass' clippings. The 'grass' needs to be broken down by oils or fats in order to 'work' prior to being ingested.

The only reason I mention Alfalfa instead of straw is that 1. straw is heavy to clean out and takes longer to break down alfalfa breaks down faster. 2. the vet/poultry expert some of us have met says Alfalfa is great for them and makes the yolks really orange. And 3. I figure if they eat half of it, there is less for me to rake out! Lol.
A couple of years ago I had to rake out the run from the really cold time when I put the straw down to keep them up off the snow and ice. It was wet and extremely heavy! Just my experience with it.

That's a good point. I remember some people posting about issues with long stems getting caught in the crops - what was causing that? Was it a kind of alfalfa? I can't remember the guidelines that were posted. I'd love to put something in that they can eat.

Well, so long as they will eat it. I've offered the chicks a strawberry and a grape so far, and they act like it will kill them. Eventually a brave bird will peck at it, but they never figure out that it's food. If it doesn't look like chick starter or mealworms, it's not edible.
