Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Speaking of plants, if anyone is interested I have a volunteer Buddleia butterfly bush in my driveway. I've been meaning to dig it up and send it to my sister-in-law, but the darn thing is now over 4 feet across and almost 6 feet tall. Anyone who wants it is welcome to it, and I can help dig it up (I don't think I can do it on my own). I'm in Lynnwood.

It's rather invasive, but it smells heavenly when it blooms! Silvery leaves and big purple spikes of flowers.

I'll take it! My entire front yard is now grass free and I need to fill it with something :) (If anyone wants to give me any other plants-I can't come to Chehalis but I'm sure that someone from Seattle would be happy to bring it back for me? ;) )

Both of the SLRWs have single combs (which happens, alas, as my SSHs showed me) but they're most easily sexed by looking at their body feathers, and probably not until they're older. Wyandottes take a LONG time to mature. The BLRWs in this picture are twelve weeks:

Okay, I was wondering if it was just a different kind of comb. I'm not too concerned about the comb being wrong, I don't consider single combs to be ugly and I'm not going to show them. Last night I watched them some more, and Tandoori's comb was looking pretty red. The 3 biggest Wyandottes were all squabbling and the rest of the chicks were just trying to get out of the way. As soon as Tandoori is fully feathered she may be going out to a friend's flock in Carnation.

Around what age should I be able to tell if they are cockerels?

Thank you!!

I'm a mere 133 posts behind, but I wanted to let you know that Manna Pro is now carrying the Egg Skelters. I just saw it on Facebook. Limited color variety, but if you can live with one of these 3 colors, I'd probably get my order in soon!

Ideally, you would prune it in late February but you can do it now before transplanting it. Cut 2/3 of every branch to make it easier to dig up and move.

Great! Let me know when you would like to come over. I'm home during the afternoons, as well as on most weekends. If you don't have a large vehicle to transport it, we could prune the limbs back (I've cut the two that I planted behind the garage down to short stumps, and they will grow 6 feet in a season, easily) or I can drive it over in my van.

Thanks! Any idea how deep the roots on this are going to be? I've never dug one up. These seem to be unkillable (I'm pretty sure I've run this particular one over when it was smaller), but I don't want to damage the roots when I dig it.

Now is a perfect time to transplant trees (and shrubs). Just make sure that they get ample water in their new home.

Ok, just this part made me laugh with how much has been coming down lately. Sorry.

I have pools of water standing out in the low spots. I haven't had to water the chickens in over a week, I've rigged the rain coming off the roofs to fill their water bowls. They drink from the pools when they free range. They will go farther out when there is water out in the field.

I'm guessing it's the wrong time of year to transplant trees, right? I have an unwanted Golden Rain Tree (I might actually have 2) and an unwanted Red bud in my "tree nursery". I grew them from starts. They are 3 years old. I'd hate to dig them up and have them die, though. I also have an unwanted evergreen that the biggest kid planted... darn thing is in a pot and huge. I'm trying to explain to the oldest DS that we have to let it go somewhere that it can be planted before it dies in the pot. I don't want it in my yard. It's "his" tree and he doesn't want to let it go. The thing is taller than my fence.

The Golden Rain Tree(s) and Red bud came from the Arbor Day foundation.

In the spring, if anyone is interested in any of those, let me know.
It's a great time to plant trees unless you want to wait until they've lost their leaves which is the perfect time. I have a golden rain tree I need to move when it has dropped it's leaves.
