Woohoo, I found a little cedar coop that I can use for quarantine! (And some meat chicks next spring!) It cost less than the materials for building a tractor would have run me, and this one has a nice, small footprint. I already put a wider perch in, and I'm going to paint the floor and interior walls this weekend. I also need to replace the chicken wire around the bottom run with hardware cloth, and make a door on one side. You could tell the builder didn't have chickens. There's no way to get a bird out from the run! It also doesn't have a nest box, but until I get an adult bird that won't matter. I'll pick up a kit from the feed store so I can add one whenever I need it.

This little coop has a door about 1'X2' covered with hardware cloth. Is this going to let in too much of a draft in the winter? Should I cut a board to fit in the door? I could also rig up a guillotine style door to cover the pop hole, which is on the floor of the coop and has nothing to cover it right now. It's just an open hole leading onto the ramp. I'm glad this isn't going to be a permanent coop, as something could dig under the wall, come in from underneath and go right up into the coop. Although I could set the whole thing on the concrete patio and nothing will get in or out.

Oh, I've got another question on silkies! I know they can't fly. Can they get up onto a roost a foot off the ground?

So I would like to know if anyone breeding Silkies has any fertile eggs available. My wife fell in love with silkies at the Clackamas CO Fair. I would like to get 2 eggs for her. Color is not important. Just not looking for any Silkie mixes. I would be willing to drive an hour away from Oregon City. If anyone near me can help me out please PM me with info and cost. I really want to surprise my wife. She knows we were gonna get them in the spring but I was not expecting a broody so early, so it would be a great surprise. We were planning on letting anyone that got broody hatch eggs so we have continuous flow of eggs and meat birds. She just loved how soft the Silkie was and how friendly too.

I wish I did! I have a couple of girls that are laying but aren't with the rooster right now. There is a breeder in Oregon City, Marjorie Best. [email protected]. I would suggest getting more than 2. There is always a chance that they won't hatch. I could throw the rooster in and get some before the show in Chahalis. Can't garantee fertility though. I just got him.

Thank you for turning me to Marge. She was a hoot on the phone today. Talked with her almost 30 minutes. Got quite the lesson on a broody hatching eggs. The eggs she was gonna sell me are 4-5 days in so she said I should hatch my eggs that I put under her today and I can get the chicks that hatch from her eggs when mine hatch. Gonna be getting 4. And she lives 3 miles down the road from me. WooHoo

Glad she could help you surprise your wife. Always good to have someone who can answer questions about owning silkies. They are a whole other animal. Just saying. But oh so cute and sweet!

Well something got one of my silkie chicks today. Probably the red tailed hawks that come by every now and then. It wasn't running for cover when the rooster was sounding alarm the last few days, so was probably was out eating grass. The other three are there and I looked all over for the missing one.

Their airports were small - not that whole thing. I'll have to take a picture. Although, my oldest is determined to build the entire thing. It looks like I have to put printer ink and more cardstock on the shopping list. LOL!
He is definitely into constructing things with paper, that boy.

And he is very good at it!
