I started out with 6. Lost the first egg from a DD climbing over it in the van.

Hatch rate lowered before the eggs even got home. Set 5, and 4 hatched. So what's my hatch rate?

This next set of eggs is going to ride home in a child-proof container.

Quote: Sure unless there isn't enough room. Also I am not sure age/size but young.
The dog crate used to transport a French Brittany (45 lbs). Crate size shouldn't be an issue - I was worried they'd be freaked out and hurt each other. We have a long drive from Chehalis.
Should be fine!!! I would also suggest you get the bators up and running! I am not sure what is coming for you and I hear rumor there may be something coming for me! I have been out trying to bribe the Silkiebator .

Is it OK to transport hatching eggs in one of those hard plastic camping egg containers? Or will it damage them? I'm trying to figure out the best way to kid-proof eggs.

I could also bring a cooler or hard box of some sort - just in case the wee ones get hyper and try to climb out of the van any other direction than the door they're supposed to go out. The coolers we have are pretty big, though. The kids have "Me first" mentality and tend to race each other out the door. I haven't figured out a way to effectively curb it. There are days I wish someone would invent child-proof seat belts in the same way they've invented child-proof doors.

Well something got one of my silkie chicks today. Probably the red tailed hawks that come by every now and then. It wasn't running for cover when the rooster was sounding alarm the last few days, so was probably was out eating grass. The other three are there and I looked all over for the missing one.

Oh no!! I'm sorry to hear this. Those dang hawks are sneaky sometimes that's for sure!!

Well, I have the usual near-sightedness, presbyopia, and no sign of any diabetic changes in my eyes, but it cost me $70 to find that out (yay health insurace!) and made me rush to finish chores, and my puils are stil dilated so everything looks fuzzy.

The chooks are looking much more feathery than they were a few days ago; Snotty Cockerel in particular is GORGEOUS, if anyone wants a tame EE for Yard Art purposes he'd be a good one.

Froze here two nights in a row but the darned white (either Prunus or Bean) leafhoppers are still alive, and flying into my eyes all the time.I hates them, I do.

It's the penalty for me letting birds free range here. Most of the silkies stay within 10 feet of their coop. That silkie cockerel is very good at watching the sky and giving warning before anyone else.
