Question, why switch out the 2x4's? I like them because they can get their toes covered with their warm bodies(less chance of frostbite, which is low where we all live)

They're not 2x4. I think they're 2x3... maybe? I'll have to go measure. I was wondering if their feet were getting cold because their toes wrap down the sides of them. 2x4s would be wider.

Yes, but once they hunker down, aren't their feet covered by their feathers?

2x3's should be fine. I have them in one of my coops and 3 of my Favs are in there. They are pretty big birds and it's fine. So I wouldn't change them out. If they were 2x2's I definitely would.

OmG!!
So, there is NO way I'm gonna catch up on all the talk on here!! Jeez!
So, just a little catch up here, for those of you following the continuing hip saga. I was in Seattle this past Monday at the Seattle VA for an Orthopedic consult, and as I had suspected they want to do a total hip replacement! So, they have scheduled me for Aug 28,2013. Yes I know it's a long time from now, yes I know a whole lot of pain to endure to get there. BUT, after speaking to the nurses and the head of surgery there, they do more hip replacements then I first thought! I mean lots!! They also do surgery for Uof W and Harborview. And I really don't have the 6 or more thousand dollars it may take to pay my half of the 20% of my copay. So, there it is!
We did however take my dads old truck up to CLs so Einstein can rebuild or replace what he can and make good use of it. We also visited a short time with CR and Diane, and they were very kind and made dinner for us! Terry and I want to express our appreciation to both couples for their hospitality and generosity!

It was a long trip but we got a lot done.
I hope everyone is staying warm and dry, and your flocks are all doing well! Sorry I couldn't go back over the posts, just don't have the patience! LOL!! so if I missed something I apologize!
other than that, all the critters were still here and still alive so, yea, still got lots of ducks, if any one needs some!! LOl!

Ok, now I see. Switching out TO 2x4. Its early, not used to being up before noon. I switched my weekend sleep schedule so I could let the kids out and make sure no one gets into Whitie's nest with her. I tried moving her into the brooder in the shed yesterday and she refused to nest, so I put her back into her original nest. Gonna try at 2 weeks to move her into the tractor nest box in total darkness, nest, bird and eggs at the same time. That will be interesting. Hopefully she will stay in the dark and then stay on them in the day. Her nest box she is in now is the top row of boxes. I don't want the chicks to fall 2.5'.

You are so very welcome. And thank you so much for the delivery of goodies from you and from CL.

Hi pettec!

I just had to share this. I walk around the corner from the kitchen and this is what I see. I keep my camera on the dining table so I can grab it quick if needed. I moved slow as Pig Pen was watching me so he wouldn't get up thinking I was getting treats. These two are buddies.

A total hip replacement, yikes. But if it gets rid of the pain and you can enjoy life again, that would be awesome.
Glad you got to visit with CL and CR. They are both good peeps.
