Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Oh what a nice day it WAS! I was able to play in the garden, let my chiciedoos out to forage and clean the coop. Now it looks nasty AGAIN. I had such High Hopes. On the news last night they said we had 5.97" of rain here in Bremerton. No wonder I was depressed! Sigh.

So I'm dreaming about spring and the 2 chickens I want to get. And I need your experience again... puleeeez.
In the spring I want to add 2 pullets to my tiny flock and I want to add them at the same time so they'll have a buddy to hang with instead of having to bear the brunt of the pecking all alone. I want to get an nice ameraucana (maybe from Jean) and a red sex link, maybe a Gingernut Ranger. I think I'll have to get them from two different places (unless someone knows a person that raises both). 4 month old pullets sound good to me -- young enough to befriend and old enough that POL will come fairly soon.

So my questions are:
1. Any suggestions as to where to get both a *good* ameraucana and a Red Star or Gingernut Ranger from the same breeder?
2. If they come from different farms what issues can you foresee?

I have one large dog kennel (36 x 24) that I just bought. If I can get 2 from the same farm I can use that for quarantine, but will I need two?

Thanks All You Smart Chicken People!!!!!

excuse the messy kid fingerprints on the window.... during these excessively rainy washington days my chickens decided it was time to chill out/dry off and watch some human entertainment through my front door window... Is this anything like watching tv for us?.!! lol!! My chickens are watching the daily episode of me chasing kids and animals around the house! CRACKS ME UP!!! Chicken TV! Who would've thunk it? :) Having free range chickens is super entertaining!

That's adorable!

Actually, Marmalade is the nicest Belgian I've ever met (I've only met d'Anvers). My other five are a bit nutty. I got them from a WSU student who was breeding them; I think they were a bit less than two months old. I could never get them to be nearly as friendly as my standard birds. They are almost afraid of their own shadows but will bully whoever will run from them. They charge at the little Douglas squirrels they find eating fallen seed. I can only tell one bird apart from the rest because she's developed frosted tail feather tips. Her name is Peanut because I caught her in the garage eating the single packing peanut that was floating around. She's the only one I can catch and hold. They all try to sleep in a tree outside the coop and it drives me nuts. As a group, I call them the Teeny Ones. Marmalade will remain a separate entity, I think.

I suspect you and I got our birds from the same young woman in Centralia?

I learned something from the way Elvis was housed while he was growing up, and from Snotty Cockerel, who inherited his house (and who is gorgeous, and who I would keep as yard art if I were not over-birded): raising birds where they are close to you as you go about your daily activities, in narrow pens so they're always close to you, seems to make them tamer than they'd otherwise be. The young ladies are still in the laundry room, which is also my back entry (and the only air-lock style entry I have, so it's the one that gets used most in bad weather) and will, soon, move out to the back porch.

I'm trying to handle them more than I did the EEs, for instance, but I'm sort of over-booked, still, since DH is in very bad shape (question mark is not a good shape) and I'm getting stuck with stuff that was never my job, like taking out garbage.

If you got them from Kristen (sp?), then yes. We tried a rooster of hers, but he was a tiny terrorist.

Quote: OK, You are soooo right. But I yam what I yam. I will post within the guidelines the best the I can but if it is the death of me then so be it. Whatever! If I get banned then just check with Rustler or Chicky if you would like to get in touch with me or look on Facebook! I'm there too. Geez, no big loss, chickens aren't the entire world.

And me too!!! While I try hard to be decent and post within the"rules". Some people may want to try to not be so up tight about things. Geez Louise take a chill pill !!!!

I just love my new baby, Farmin Momma's little Belgian!  She's the most darling thing and I think my diabetes gets worse every time I see her because she's so sweet!  :gig

We named her Marmalade.

You and me both.

Belgians/ Barbu d'Anvers are the most charming little birds, sweet-tempered and funny to watch and so little OMG.

If you haven't checked out the thread in the Breeds and Showing section, you should- there was a picture posted last night to answer my question about perches, and... it's just so.. I dunno, here go look for yourself, isn't that just darling?

Yup. I suspect I'll be getting more birds from her in the long run, although I'm very unlikely to breed d'Anvers until I've got a better situation for giving them room without direct contact: the reason OEGBs were at the top of my list is that the roosters are not prone to aggression against humans. I'd laugh at my timidity if it weren't for the 30 year old nerve damage in my right thigh I got from a RIR that had even been despurred (and was put out of our misery when he took to waking up to headlights and attacking everyone who drove into the yard when normal chickens are asleep!) and the reminders every summer that even hummingbirds can be scarry.

I just had a terrible temptation to build a sunroom where I could grow roses and lemons and orchids and fill it with Barbu d'Anvers, though, which is why a benificent providence does not send me winning Lotto tickets.

Well I had the exam with a REAL eye Dr. this am. He had to remove more foreign body and rust ring from my eye. Put a contact bandage on my eyeball and said I have to come back tomorrow. Also bring a driver as I won't be able to see well when he gets done tomorrow. He really didn't like it when I told him I have no driver but I can drive by braille just fine. I am just about ready for this to be over. I am tired of the hurt and blurred vision!! And then there's the bill. Just for today $461.
