Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

Looking for some opinions. I've just talked to someone who breeds an RIR and RIW to get gold sex links. What do you think the pullet offspring will be like in terms of
-- egg production (6 a week, 5 a week?)
-- size of the bird (i.e, a large, med, or smallish LF)
-- broodiness (rarely?)
-- temperament

THANKS!

YOU WIN!!!! And they totally act exactly like the characters in the movie...

Thanks for the well wishes. I am phenomenally fortunate that my spouse is incredibly supportive, despite this disease cutting well into my salary since I am out of leave days. I hope a solution or a remission is in your, and everyone else's, immediate future!

Quick bird name LOL for y'all -- The 3 bantam "Easter Eggers" are the newest to the flock, only here for about a fortnight now. 2 of the 3 are sweet and friendly... the 3rd is nasty-aggressive - kicks and bites. I am generally not interested in feeding something that bites me, so when she was not present at dusk headcount Saturday I wasn't really sad and didn't do much of a jailbreak search. Didn't even consult the Fowlcatraz Bloodhounds (Clumbers... but you use whatcha' got! LOL). Had to come home from work early today (I consider it an accomplishment I made a bit more than 5 hours, though!) and there she was in the exercise yard.
Spouse thinks she looks like a lion, so I wondered aloud if we should name her after the Tiger that mauled Roy in his Sigfried & Roy show at the Mirage. "Montecore", I believe. Spouse is a stickler for details, however, so a tiger name when the bird looks like a LION is no. My next idea was "Rabies" and that was put into consideration, but she is also putting forth the evil lion in the Lion King movies, "Scar".
The last nasty bird we had was about 6 years ago one of our pigeons, we called him Ba***rd without the stars. Fortunately for him, but not us, he fathered the very strongest chicks (we never lost any chicks of his, other nests were a bit better than 50% and a pair surviving was rare, All of his survived.) and the best flyers, so we ended up keeping him around, though it meant I couldn't do pigeon chores b/c he'd attack me particularly viciously. He died of old age FINALLY after about 3 years with us.

I'll try to remember to report when we do decide on a name for her. And if she bites me again she better plan to have the most awesome eggs EVER... like with flashing neon advertising or something.
YAY!!!!!!!!! I rarely win!!
That's some funny stuff, right there! Not the fact you've been attacked by velocaraptors, but the other stuff!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I remember !!!
Dancing is the 3rd best exercise there is !!!
The first being swimming (alot of swimming) and y'all know what the 2nd is...and alot of that is required also...NO QUICKIES !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first chickens I got were Hubbard Browns, which I believe are similar if not the same thing (correct me if I'm wrong). Those girls were great egg producing birds (minus one who was laying very thin-shelled eggs later on and became egg-bound) and gave an egg almost everyday. I would call them medium to small-sized LF. Mine never went broody and they were pretty personable even though I got them at 2m/o and they weren't handled before I got them.

Got a second coat of paint on the outer frame of the coop today, plus a first coat on the inside of the underneath section and a couple other areas. My son has been taking nice, long naps, and I really hope it continues! Lamont is stuck at home with the crud that's going around, so it's up to me to be productive this week and get as much of the painting and hardware cloth done as I can. My husband has been nagging about clearing out the garage so our vehicles can go back inside, so I took him out there last night and he was impressed by the progress. Still wants it all done ASAP, but I'm going as fast as I can!

The silkie chick is still hanging on. Eats, drinks and poops. She takes steps around the box, but I didn't try to put her back in the brooder today. Tomorrow I have an appointment with a vet for an exam. She's not a livestock vet, but she's a Board certified avian and reptile veterinarian, and one of my favorites. She said the only test they could do for Marek's was post mortem and very expensive, so we won't be doing that, but I'd like her opinion and advice. The amount I should learn is worth the exam fee, and if I need the silkie euthanized it's not too expensive. I'd rather not have to kill the chick myself if it needs to be done. I think I could handle killing meat birds just fine, but a 9 week old white silkie? I'd worry what my subconscious had in store next time I slept.

Hello Washington BYC folks :) I just thought Id pop in and say hello... Its been awhile. Life has been very busy for me so my computer time has been limited :( I do think about ya all often. I only read back the last 24 hours.... Good to see ya all still chatting. CR hope you are feeling better soon.

I downsized my girls to just one coop for the winter.. Nice to have everyone in one spot. Still have around 2 dozen. Im thinking Ill add Sex-Links in the early spring, to refresh my layer group Im looking for mild tempers and good layers. I like my RIR and BR but Ive found the BR to be pretty feisty:) . Right now I have way more egg orders than I do eggs... Hehheee.

Ill try to pop in more often to chat.. I miss "speaking chicken" :) I have finals in school now through December 4th... So maybe after then Ill be able to have some PC time.. Miss ya all!!!

Hello, New to forum and found the WA thread. Am in Poulsbo, Kitsap, WA. Am new to chicken keeping since June when I got 4 EE chicks to go with the 3 yr old RIR hen I inherited from the last renter of our place. No more renters! I am really enjoying the whole experience. Hooked I guess.

I wasn't able to get a nice clear shot, but I think it's still decent. Pengin has taken to hanging out with the two BLRWs, Cinnamon and Bunny. She likes to charge over to them when she sees them pecking around in the yard and just starts doing what they're doing. They might be a bit startled, but they keep grazing. It's quite cute!

Aw, cute! Looks like a great place to free range too.
