I don't think I would spend that kind of money on a bunny!

Especially when you are showing, bring that bunny you paid $200+ for and your own home-bred beats it out. I'm afraid of that

Since each judge has their own opinion!

Do you raise alpacas? We were actually considering getting into something like this. It would be way out of my knowledge zone though. We don't have horses, I don't want to mess with a beef. We have right around 2 acres of irrigated pasture and besides letting the neighbors use it I would trying to think of different things we could do. Other thoughts have been a big pumpkin patch or raise Christmas trees. Alpacas are pretty spendy to get started with aren't they?

What about sheep? you get fiber and lambs for the freezer and if they are dairy sheep you can get milk for butter and cheese.

Can ya tell if I ever get out of the city I'm planning on sheep? ;D

actually right now they are pretty cheap to get into.. the bottom fell out on them last fall.. we sold off our stock last spring, you can pick up bred females for around $1000 (same stock a year ago would have been around $8000), fiber boys folks are giving away around spokane for free. Just watch craigslist and you could pick up a couple boys and they would keep your grass down.
We have Barbados (blackbelly) sheep.. fabulous weed eaters and NO maintenance.. they are hair sheep so no shearing ;-)

Hi, I'm new here, not necessarily new to chickens but new to this forum
smile.png
I live with my family (husband and six kiddos 7 and under) in Concrete WA (actually Birdsview-small community 30 minutes east of Mt Vernon). We love it out here, bought a foreclosure about a year and a half ago and have completely remodeled it and we are now just getting our little farm going. We have about 20 chickens and are getting 20 quail chicks tomorrow, going to try my hand at raising quail.

I've enjoyed reading about a number of different fowl related discussions on here, great community!

I had Flemish Giants in Tonasket when we lived there, and they are all negative cash flow.
The housing is enormous, the feeders, etc had to be big or they cannot get their heads in to feed, and the cages all have to be reinforced to support the weight, then they take forever to mature, about twice as long as any other rabbit, off the top of my head seems like it was 1 1/2 years before they could be bred.
I had no trouble breeding them, they just ate forever like a small horse would.
They are not pets, they get BIG.
And rabbit food is expensive, and the alternative is to let them browse free...and then you never see them again.
They are also not pretty rabbits, looks like a big hare only fatter.
I do not advise anyone to raise these for food or pets...heartsland rabbits NICE BUNNIES!!!!

Well done, I love the small wheaten -looking bunnie....where were you before here or is here your home ?
