Cool idea ! Straw bales insulate so well !!!
I just got a recipe for a flock block from someone on the Cochin thread (I think it was Cochins) and will forward it on.
She used canned pumpkin.
I like to use peanut butter and lard at 50% and add seeds and stuff...I have not made the flock block yet but it is something to do while locked up in a snow storm, if you have the ingredients...

It's pretty cold here. . . . Froze over last night, then just at the beginning of the morning, we get clouds and light snow that moves into heavy snow, then - We're now getting snow showers. Heavy snow, break, heavy snow, break. . .

Terrie do your ducks eat the oatmeal or just chickens ?

You are of course asking if her ducks eat the oatmeal or if the chickens eat the oatmeal, right? Not asking if the ducks eat the chickens?

I'm jealous of your snow! It felt like snow today. Cold and wet though only. If it's gonna be cold, it might as well snow I say.

I say the same thing all the time.

They do if they feel like it. Mostly they take a huge bite and fling it around, they take another bite as if it will suddenly taste like slugs and fling it some more. Then embarrass me in front of the neighbors by walking around with frozen cereal on their bills.
They simply have no manners.

My greenhouse is 6x8' I just went out and measured. I am not sure if I have already said what size it is. I know it has been a long time since I bought it. I used just a small inexpensive space heater, the kind that is normally used inside a house. I bought a temperature sensitive outlet that keeps the space between 36 to 42 degrees, if I remember right. It seemed to work the way I wanted it to. I had put blankets over the top on the greenhouse during last winters blast of cold. It was less than freezing for the best part of 2 weeks I think in December of 2009. The blankets were able to retain enough of the heat to keep all the pot of geraniums from freezing. I had no problems with overwintering the plants out in the GH. They continued to bloom for most of the winter and on into the spring. It didn't help that it was so slow this year to warm up.

I still need to pull the begonias in tomorrow before the temperatures really get cold. I don't know whether or not I will dig up dahlias or not. I have never had great success with digging them up. They have always rotted on me. For many years I have had them re-grow as long as I just leave them where they are planted. I do worry a bit about the dahlias that are in some of the larger pots just because they are more prone to freezing. I also will need to dig up the Canna bulbs tomorrow, and get them set for the winter. I left all of the summer bulbs stay where they were, so that they will have that first frost, so as long as I get them in tomorrow I think I will be okay with everything.

Good grief what a lot of work !!!
