DH has been out in his 'fort' so I came back...and now I am going away, I am sick with this Grays Harbor County elk kill, left to rot, all the cows were pregnant...I wanted to "talk" to DIY about the new Mother and the icky chicken remark that would greatly upset Illia about how heritage breeds are of no desire cuz they lay WAY less eggs than HATCHERY prodiction-bred varieties like red stars or California whites...(BARF)
What I am interested in is the cordwood constuction and the solar hot water shed build, which does not need to be timber framed...

OK...wind does not look near as bad as the guy said this morning...

Easter Egger cockerels these days (if you bought him from a hatchery of feedstore within the last 3 years) have been introducing blue into their stock, and a lot of people don't notice what is blue and what isn't. But, it is very possible for one to go blue. If you have a chipmunk chick and it turns blue - VERY possible. I myself have blue duckwing Araucanas who look the same as normal duckwing Araucanas as chicks.

Naked neck is a dominant gene. Feather shanking is dominant, HOWEVER, I've never gotten any from my own hatchery Brahmas, so it could possibly be from your Brahma roo, but doubtful. . .

Still, I'd love to see photos. But in the mean time, yes, it is very possible only one chick turned out black. As for your chipmunk ones, those are definite EE crosses . . No other breed you mentioned can pass on or has the chipmunk pattern as a chick. (chipmunk means it is a duckwing, partridge, or BBR type color)

Also, the combs you should be able to tell type by birth. A single combed chick will have a flopped over little sawtooth edging. A pea combed chick will have a rounded, but smooth comb or comb with tiny but perfect little bubbly bumps on it. A rosecombed chick will have a perfectly smooth, broad comb.

If you provide pics, that would help. So far it sounds like your Easter Egger is doing most of the work, but you've yet to mention your hens.

i will have to think of creative ways to bribe my boyfriend to take pictures of the chicks. basically i have many breeds. i have more different breeds in hen than i do in roosters. my brahma always throws leg feathering. all my chickens are hatchery stock. and one of my new roosters which is a light brahma from my buff roo and the light hen. he is huge. but all he does is sit on the roost all day, no crowing while its other siblings RIRxBraham roo crows, and the buffbrahmaXbuff brahma crows. this one doesn't or show any roo behavior towards hens... its weird. it cant be a hen cos it has hackles large red face and is the size of the roosters, larger than the parent hen.

i do have speckled sussex hens, an EE roo that has white hackles and saddle, but braham styled, and it is black, red and i think greenish.... (memmory...)
i have milli roos but they do not contribute any, they try, but fail.

What is BBR color??? i do not have any partrige colored hens. one of these days you should visit leavenworth, bring some chicken breeds i want, and i can show you my diverse flock....

I could not see any combs when i picked up a few chicks on sunday. there is obviously a space where they go, but not developed to where i can see any ridges sticking out of its headline. its weird. maybe if bf gets a close up shot, some are maturing. oh some do not have tails also! some have nicely developed tail feathers, and others... none.

Hens: buff orp, barred rock, turkens, RIR, EE (different colors with really unique lacing, brahma lacing), 2 acona's left, 1 leghorn, 1 austrolorp, black production strains, brahmas, some bantams that do not lay eggs..., speckled sussex, blue andulsians, wyndotte, coshin, jersy giants, 1 seabright left, and i think that might be it for hens, that i can think of. some breeds i left out due to the fact they do not lay anymore, though the roosters still visit, but no eggs...

Roosters: Buff Brahma, buff brahama, EE, Turken, RIRxBuff Brahma (Red Brahma), 2 millies, Black Jersy Giant, inactive Light Brahma, and i think thats it too.

bit hard to keep track of what i have left, coons been snacking on all the acona's had 5 with a roo, and lost him and 3 hens... and some ee hens.... and a seabright hen and a roo... a barred brahma roo.... those ones are gone.

The speckles sussex hen that went broody, we found her nest. there is a hole in the bottom of an old style porta potty, and she hatched in... the dirt.... lift up the toilet seat, and she was down there..... it hasn't been used in 30+ years..... but still eww.

i will try to get bf to take pics... otherwise i will do it in 3 weeks..... i do have a spring wish list of things i want to buy from you....

What do you all charge for eating eggs? Since my neighbor's discovered I have chickens, I've got everyone asking me for eggs. It's going to be a while before mine start laying, though 3 born in June look ready. Organic food is getting too pricey at nearly $30 per bag if I'm going to be supplying eggs for more than my family. The gal at the North Bend Farmers Market charged $5 per dozen. I thought that was steep, but they sold out quickly and she never came back. I even bought 2 dozen from her. They tasted so good I bought chickens. I'm thinking of charging $3 or $3.50....

Ogress, I don't sell eggs, but had a neighbor selling a couple years ago for $4, The Freddys near me sell organic brown eggs for $4.89, last I looked.

I'm going to put you on my "awesome list"

You have hatchery birds, but you've got a nice big variety, complete with quite a few breeds most people don't care to order/purchase.

I guess I'm such a visual person that listing all that makes me just go, "whoa slow down."
lol.png
But, I'm sure the chipmunk chicks are your Easter Egger cockerel x . . . there's a couple in there that can produce such color, but most likely I'd just say EE for now.

The black one is also a possibility of different crosses. . . I'll look through the list tomorrow again, visually sort them, and let you know.

Oh, and BBR is basically solid gold duckwing. Brown Leghorns, Welsummers, OEGB's, and a few other breeds have the color.
