Stay off the phone landlines, get your critters in and shut off your computer to avoid power surges, TVs too...if it is too close, unplug them.
Aren't you glad you do not get lightening too often ?
We have had it alot here !

Are you saying that Washington does not get a lot of lightning.

Compared to the mid west, no we don't get a whole lot of lightening, but There is a HUGE difference in climates on iether side of the cascades... So I can really only speak about the west side of Washington...

Usually not here on the coast..not in Oregon or California either.
Usually it is over land where I have experienced the most lightening...Newport/Cusick WA-Old Town ID area seemed to have alot...a guy out there told me his theory that alot of it was due to how much conductive minerals are in the ground, like copper and gold.
I do not know if that is true...during the dust bowl the electricity charged by dust storms would discharge on wire fencing...so maybe his theory of the lightening discharging on conductive mineral deposits was true ?

It is also true that most electrical storms come from warmer storms...usually late summmer early fall or spring...but we have La Nina this year so who knows ???

Do you ever get thunder snow or heat lightening?

On our side of Washington (Eastern) we get heat lightning, but no snow thunder. We ground-to-cloud and cloud-to-cloud lightning. We have lightning of different colors too, depending on the heat, humidity, etc. I have seen trees that have been hit by lightning, the bottoms (base) are usually exploded and the pitch is crystalized. I have seen telephone poles hit, and there is glass at the base of them where it went through the dirt. A lady in town...her neighbor's house was hit, it bounced over and hit her house and knocked her down - she was standing on her porch watching the lightning. Rare Feathers can tell you about the lightning hit that struck up in the trees past her house, caused a fire and it swept down the valley, almost taking out her house. It burned down a historical landmark school, very near her. This happened 2 summers ago (if I remember correctly).

We get some crazy storms. We have had funnel clouds, that are uncatoragized, but it has knocked down trees and ripped a roof off of the Stampede grounds grandstand, a number of years ago.

Oh yeah deffinately need waterproof blankets around here! We have multiple back up blankets. My new baby Prada is doing great! She is settleing in just fine. I find it hilarious that the chickens are smarter than the horses!

My little girl "DD" passed out with her head on my lap, and I just noticed. She has had a LONG morning, she has never heard thunder before. Poor little dear was afraid, and wound up in my bed at 6:45. Oh hay lightbulb just came on! It was more than likely Chloe that woke me up this AM. lol

Wait, I thought you just got rid of a couple horses because you didn't have the money to feed them? Not judging,.. must have the wrong person.

No your thinking of the right person... And the reason I couldn't afford those two horses is because they were ancient, and needed over $250.00 in supplements a month. The big gray mare was 38, and the bay was 35. The gray mare had NO molars, and all of her remaining insizor "front teeth" were rotted out, all this on top of having cushings disease. The bay mare, had neurological issues, she could not hold her head up above her withers, or she would fall over, she could not walk a straight line, could not trot or canter, without falling over... So yes. It was kinder for them to be put down, and more cost effective on my part to not keep them. I still feel it sounds cruel, when I re-read what I write about them, but I know in my heart that they are much better off. I had many people come out look at them and tell me I was crazy for taking them in. But I kept my promise to them, they remained comfortable, spoilt rotten, and happy until the day they left their bodies.

And I'm not worried about anyone judging me. As I have nothing to hide. I do things legally and in the best interest of my family and critters.

No and no, however I used to live in Utah - There we had heat lightning (I called 'em "summer flashes") and lots of normal lightning

A funnel cloud?! Wow!! That is crazy!

It is currently hailing/raining cattle and horses.

My parents ordered a fresh ham (?) from Safeway and they have their own recipe that they are doing. I am to understand that there has been nothing done to it...not smoked, preserved, etc. It has to soak in a brine for 3 days...so it cannot be previously cured.

Wow, I will look into it !

not at all like you might... I for one really like a good thunderstorm... from a safe place.

We were in St Anthony a couple summers ago at the dunes --and the most AWESOME thunder storm came thru there. Nothing like a high desert lightening show to make you feel a little awe. I would have to say that was NOT a safe place as we were in a wide open camping area with about 150 other campers/trailers and quads and sand cars all with tall flags on them. 'hit here, hit here!!' THAT was a little scary. could feel the electricity in the air. *shiver*

Oh yes !
We used to climb up on the roof and watch the lightening storms when we were kids.
And I remember the heat lightening all summer in Tonasket...no thunder...really weird when there is so many flashes and there was no thunder.
I do not think it was cuz it was far away either, the heat lightening would flash right over us...and rolls across the sky alot like the Northern Lights do.
Very weird, no thunder.

Buy from a local farmer. At least thats what my family does... I can't stand store bought Ham anymore... Way to salty for my taste. But the pork that we get from our local pig farmer is OH SO GOOD!
droolin.gif
Usually costs us about $1.50 - $2.00 a pound dressed...

There was a tornado in North Idaho when I lived there last...about 1998 ?
It ripped up Hiway 41 and tore stuff up, ripped up a barn in priest River, and headed up Selkirk way toward the Dam I think/
Took out over 100 trees on my place.
I saw it, it was real, but alot of the 'authorities' denied it was a twister or if we could ever get a twister there.
I saw it.
I was in it.

I would agree...but make sure to request a fresh or raw...I don't know what to call it. You don't want it cured or brined or smoked, anything. Raw meat. That is what my parents are picking up. My dad is a recipe searcher and found this one where he has to make his own brine and soak the ham...so I guess it is raw. I am not sure what to call it. A local butcher would be great.
